Pick me up

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, it's something danceable and quite electronic:
https://youtu.be/EIOLr1RJuUo
In this instance Linux - in the guise of midish - did the sequencing of the melodic parts and Nama was the recording, mixing and mastering tool deluxe that it always is. The rest was hardware. I had an analogue craving, so we hear multiple tracks of Behringer Neutron, one even in paraphonic mode, and multiple single tracks of Behringer RD-8 (Roland TR-808 clone) on the drums. I used the RD-8 sequencers because of the polymetric sequencing and probability features that I don't have in the box. Maybe that really is worth another Csound coding session. :)
As ever, feedback is welcome. What do you think about the bass part of the frequency spectrum. I often hear that my bass is rather tame.
Best wishes, Jeanette

Happy Easter! Actually liked the "electro jam" feel of the track (of course, with touches of baroque! :D). I don't think the bass was tame, I think it has tasteful texture and I liked the Reese. Top-notch mixing as always, I think this is my favorite mix you did in a synthpop track, it's very clean and professional.

I've noticed that with this type of music you're developing your own 'trademark' sound that's quite recognisable :)

Listened on dropbox - nice work.

Your songs make me smile within the first second or two, nice kind of a hook leading with the bass and synth bouncing off each other, and some subtle syncopated tones, and more parts incoming in short order. I like the variety of harmonies among the melody lines, your music theory is in good use. The tempo goes well with the nicely busy rythym parts, and the choice of sounds works very well. I think the synth-flute parts that tail off might be better with longer tails that reached a little further, and at different destinations in the chord structure, and maybe throw on a delay or gated effect on some.
But maybe I think too much. So many nice extras, swells, dynamics, intros, key changes, syncopation, all while keeping track of a punchy beat.
Maynard G Krebbs would proclaim, "WORK!!!". Still smiling...

Hey hey and thanks all! @Basslint I am very positively surprised that you rank the mix in this style so highly. Thank you! <3 Perhaps further practise and more usage in automation pays off at last. :)
@glowrak guy thank you too. The elements bouncing off each other is something I had to work on for tracks heavy on monophonic synthesizers. When it works out I love the interwoven business this creates. I did use some automation on the synth flute, but maybe too subtlely to be obvious in the mix. The driving beat might require more decisiveness. :) I'm glad you enjoyed it and reached out to tell me so.
@folderol Yes, it does seem that I have found "a voice" for this kind of song. I mainly put it down to the drums and the way they influence the rest of the writing and production. And granted: the harmonies do create a slightly unusual flair. :)
Again, thank you all for sharing your thoughts, praise and critique. It is very much appreciated and helpful.
Best wishes, Jeanette

Okay, let's all agree: Youtube NEEDS a love button! This track is really nice! :D
Thanks for sharing!!
I'd beef up the base some...but...I think you're relying in the speakers of your setup. These are...studio monitors?
A smudge more "boom" would be nice...
As for the rest...super!!!

Oh I like this a lot! Very very nice production, love the use of reverb, and the attention to detail.

Great song too!

Looks like I missed this at the time! It sounds a lot like a videogame soundtrack, and a game I'd love to play and explore :D

Hey hey @Rainmak3r , ha, it's videogame time again. :) Perhaps I really should put that down as a genre to some of my electronic instrumental pieces. Another friend suggested incidental music for video or audio series. I wonder, is part of it my desire to have some drama in it? A kind of tension...
Thanks for listening and commenting!
