When everything's been said

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, this is my new downbeat electronica track:
https://youtu.be/rDyKZPJbGXk
It features four loops cut from the live recording of Rav drum that I did at my friend's house, after which I also created the pan drum Csound instrument.
The track also includes: Yoshimi on pads and bells, LinuxSampler for the kick, rim and "hihat" designed from incidental sounds (rocks and a wicker chair), Mellotron, fretless bass, percussion and Piano. Csound for the physical inspired piano and in hardware the MiniBrute 2s and Neutron for basses and the Microwave XT for one pad layer. The Rav loops were also fired from LinuxSampler. Accept for the acoustic piano (Sampletekk/PMI 7cg) all samples are free.
Plugins used: g2reverb, Zita-Reverb, CAPS plate 2x2 and Calf Reverb, reverse delay from SWH. And many other CAPS, TAP, Invada, Calf, SWH and Fons Adriaensen's plugins for EQ'ing, chorus, delays, compression and colouring.
Hope you en joy it, certainly more than my "christmas" song recorded on Wednesday and Thursday. I'll leave that for next year. :)

A great track, and quite a bit away soundwise from other stuff that you have done lately I think!

Very nice soundscape!

Thanks Staffan! Yes, it is a bit of a departure (again). :) I had this recording lying around and had to do something with it. I immediately thought that it would be downbeat and srt of electro. But than I came across a track by German electronic musician Dominik Eulberg (the only raving ornithologist), called Rotmilan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8BjIfTwsAI
and knew exactly where to go. The only thing that I think could improve that track was a triplet feel. I may not have improved on or kept the quality of the original in other ways, but I did go with the triplet rhythm. There's better modulation and automation on his track, something I have to find good workflows for. I'm sure there's a "rainy" day coming up, where I can experiment with some of them. :)
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you liked it.

Hi @jeanette_c, lovely music (as always). It makes me want to make something similar :-)

What's the high-pitched plucked like instrument? It sounds really nice.

I had to smile when I could pinpoint the wicker chair :-) That's so funny if you know it, and it fits the music if you don't know.

I think you mean the harpsichord, it's the lute register. The harpsichord is from the Historical keyboards library by Sampletekk/PMI. It was heavily filtered in postprocessing, though I seem to recall that a highpass filter is mapped to the modwheel in the instrument itself. :) Perhaps Pianoteq also includes that register with their harpsichord expansion. It's useful and beautiful.

Your sound design skills continue to amaze me. I would never have thought about using a harpsichord in that way.

Really good work. The harpischord is used very well, and so is the Ravdrum. I'd say I really enjoy the atmosphere up from 4:50 to the end of the song. The synth coming in at around 5:20 sounds a lot like a fretless bass.

I make music as Tenaba! Bandcamp

It is a fretless bass and it's not the first time it makes an appearance, though it is probably the most exposed.
Thanks for listening and sharing your impressions and feedback.

Hi, DecentSampler has a couple sampled stratocaster guitars. You have so many cool
ambient things going on, I found myself hoping for a crunchy-bendy electric guitar solo
to stand out and embelish all those parts. There are a few dozen presets in Rakarrack
that are great with guitars, and easily modified to taste, I suspect you'd be very very good
at cooking up special shred and pluk sounds!
Have a great 2022!

A lovely serene, introspective track, well worth the listen on big speakers. The conga/hang drum feel is great, fretless bass adds to the “fluidity” of the composition. An EP/album of such tracks would be cool for a deep relaxation session. Or wellness :)

As always, top-notch choice of sounds and crystal-clear crispness of the various timbres. I would like to hear a future-garage track made by you, in the future (pun not intended!). Because in this track I hear the potential for it.

Ha! Do you have a good track or two that I might listen to in that style. I'm not well versed on garage, let alone future garage. :) Since Annie Mac left radio 1xtra, I rarely listen to my old favourite music showson the BBC.

Is it a harpsichord? It sounds much more like a Koto to me (in fact I was about to ask you which library you used for it), and especially at the beginning helped give the piece a much more exotic vibe. I guess that since it's playing as a lute that's why it sounded more like that to my ears (since a lute would have much looser strings than a harpsichord).

Nice track as usual!

The lute register is one setting that you'd find on some harpsichords. I don't exactly know what is happening mechanically. Maybe some kind of damping. Without filtering you hear the lower frequencies which tell you that an instrument of much larger size than a lute is being played. It the noise of the mechanics. It's an interesting sound, which took me some time to find out about. Here's a good example, though the recording I have on disk brings it out even clearer:

I'd love to do a version of that piece.
