KVR December Music Cafe competition.

Post by folderol »

Off and on, I've been joining in with this since 2007, and for this month. I cheated (just a bit) by dragging out a track I first compost in 1994 on the Yamaha SY 22, Now of course, it's all Yoshimi, and very much more developed :)

A quirk of these competitions is that you must provide a download link. In those early days, the only place I could think of that was long-term reliable was the Internet Archive, and I've used it ever since. This latest one is:

Oh, and if you're brave enough you can see the whole list here :lol:

Hi @folderol, no reason to be unhappy. I missed it myself as it was buried under the pile of Christmas songs that were published around the same time.

Nice arrangement, very classical. The main melody sounds like a traditional song, but I don't recognize it. Is it something you made yourself?

Thanks :)
It's an original idea of my own. I can't remember for certain how the idea came to me, probably one of those middle-of-the-night sessions.
That's when I wake up at some ungodly hour with a tune running round in my head :lol:

As always a beautiful texture. Lovely acoustic-like sounds and gorgeous pads. I like the timbre of the bells in the intro though the attack is quite hard. One of the envelope characteristics which I have always struggled with.

I missed it too, my fault! I agree that it feels very classical, and a bit Christmas-y maybe :D
The flute at ~30s sounds a bit too artificial, though: maybe it could be helped with some automation, but nothing major anyway.

@jeanny
I wanted a hard attack on that sound so it cut through the background, other times I'll soften it a bit.

@Rainmak3r
I take your point, but realistic wind instruments are very difficult to get right without physical modelling (and I wouldn't know where to start with that!).

Anyway, thanks both of you for your comments, and I'm glad you enjoyed.

Sorry I wasn't around to comment when this was first posted, but I'm catching up. This is a nice gentle piece, with a solid melody and chord progression. I like the patch changes to keep things interesting.

I agree that it sounds Christmasy -- like the soundtrack to a 1990's Christmas special on TV.

OK, so as an Italian the melody made me smile (in a good way) because its starts with the same notes as a popular Catholic hymn called "Resta con noi, Signore, la sera" (for the curious, here it is sung beautifully by tenor friar Alessandro -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vliEDTNXp90 the melody is at around 0:23)

As usual @folderol I like your delicate touch. You are a kind person and this shows both in your contributions to free software and music :D

Also the archive.org player does not work on my browser (Firefox), I had to download it and open it on VLC.

Thanks guys. It's nice to see this still being picked up.
@Basslint I'm rather surprised that you were having a problem with archive.org I've always found it to be one of the most reliable sites!
