Tidal Wave (again for something quite different)

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey everyone, I tried my hand at progressive rock. It turned out to be a mix of progressive rock/metal, soundtrack and jazz fusion, with hopefully all the ingredients of fun:
https://youtu.be/yI5w-IVeulc
Interestingly, this song is almost completely made with soft synths and not much hardware and analogue about it. Only one lead from each the MiniBrute 2s and the Neutron. The rest is masses of LinuxSampler with free and commercial samples, amongst the free ones the Salamander kit (with adaptations), strings from the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra and a nice Rickenbecker SFZ. There is Yoshimi for the pulse and pads and setBfree of course.
This song is quite the ride, I think the first minute should give a good overview of what there might be to find.
Enjoy, Jeanette

Wow I wasn't expecting that! This is impressive, so much detail with the instrumentation and song writing. For my listening experience at least. the sounds are really unusual for this genre but they work really well. The break down is amazing, it really sounds like a band playing. Very cool and just so good.

Thanks @sysrqer ! In this way it has been a new experience. It is definitely missing guitars, in my mind, which does account for some of the unusual impression. Then, I couldn't completely decide on one particular genre, even within the open horizon of all things prog. Perhaps the closest - in terms of variety - is Ayreon, though naturally his music has more detail and is more intricate exploring the well that is the concept album. It's still missing guitars. :)

Lots of skillz applied to lots of imagination, traveling, but not just aimless wandering 8)
I know little of bands and genres, but I think your song could slip into a Rippingtons playlist,
and people would think, 'How on earth did I miss this one all this time?!'

I play some guitar, and the missing guitar bit never entered my mind, while listening/enjoying.
Also your harmonized leads were tastefully contained. A lot of people get OTT with them,
with the novelty not adding much to the end result.
Cheers

wow! This IS a tidal wave. The first notes are quite classical, then you take these for a makeover! Yikes!
To say "nice" is an understatement...
How did you do the drums? This is not a druimkit, I assume...

The drumkit is a mix of SFZ sample libraries loaded in LinuxSampler. Most of it is the Salamander drumkit. I think the toms were this time substituted from an older commercial kit. I can't remember where I took the rotor toms from.
It was played live on a keyboard. Well, I played it live section by section to find what I wanted to play and then recorded it instrument by instrument with final quantisation, where applicable. I think I'd prefer going back to immediate live recording, with some quantisation. :) I _LOVE_ finger drumming!
This tiem the kit was processed heavily. The snare and kick were multiband processed with sometimes fading layers in and out over the piece, to emphasize certain qualities, like extra clickiness on the kick or an aggressive tail on the snare.

Wow! I am in awe! This is not a song, it is an 8 minute rock symphony! And I really liked all of it.

Wonderful!!!

Thank you @oscillator ! There were so many doifferent ideas in my head, when I began. I hoped that I could successfully merge them into one monolythic piece and it seems I did succeed. :) It was such a joy to turn to prog, breaking free from strict forms and limitations. Breaking up the song with odd metres, changing scales and harmonic context. And exploring the nice Rickenbecker with its different articulations/playing styles. That's how the jazzy section ended up here.

Yeah, I can imagine this was loads of fun! It shines through, in all the stuff that is happening!

I am not this "harmonically competent", but maybe I can borrow some inspiration from this attitude at least! :)

Mother of God... @jeanette_c you're awesome. What a wonderful work, congrats!

Are these the soundfonts that you mention?

Definitely yes on the SSO, and quite possible on the Rickenbecker. I'm sorry, I can't remember where I found it and in the SFZ itself there are no notes. There may have been a readme, which I lost. The unpacked SFZ is 58MB.
If it's not that, there is a bass SFZ of a Fender with even more articulations, linked in the "Samplers and samples" subforum here. Great stuff!
Many thanks for the glowing praise. I am very happy that you enjoyed it so much.

Btw. Any Britney Spears fans here? Anyone spotted the three Britney quotations just before the last main theme, around 7:28? :) I did record that part of the song on her birthday (2nd of December), so it was a matter of course. <3

Another fantastic effort, you never disappoint... I love how Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata transforms into this cool 70s synth prog extravaganza!

While I can hear some hints of Ayreon, I think I mentioned in another track how your work heavily reminds me more of those proggy 70s musicals, like Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds (or Phantom of the Paradise), and this piece does give me the same vibes, especially for it being so keyboard oriented. There were some crazy good keyboard players back in those days (Rick Wakeman and John Lord being a couple of good examples), all classically trained and yet so much in love with rock to always try and bridge them somehow, so I feel you would have felt right at home!
