Allianz - Röd jul (Swedish dansband)

Post by oscillator »

I think that "dansband" is a fairly local genre, maybe it exists also in Finland, but in Sweden it is a sort of popmusic written exclusively to dance to and to be easy on the ear.

Many years ago me and a friend started Allianz (most Swedish "dansband" groups end their names with a "z", don't ask me why) as a fun thing to do. We wrote two songs and got some gigs, so we hade to write some more songs. The national press wrote about this, and we got more gigs, one at a large Swedish dance music festival. We thought it was quite absurd, but also fun, so we went with the flow. It is strange how you can work with "serious" projects year after year with no recognition, then you do something without much thought, and this becomes kind of a hit! :)

Our thing was to take this "dansband" music and combine it with leftwing politics. One time, performing in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, I identified the then rightwing PM so I grabbed a copy of our CD and ran to him to give him this hard to get copy. He was very friendly but admitted that it "might not be my kind of music". I was happy that his security guards didn't drop me on the ground!

Although we don't really exist as a physical band anymore, we make a new song every 4th year or so. This is a fun project, and still quite absurd, although I think we are getting better at it (and upping the BPM).

Anyway. We have a new song out, "Tomma paket", "Empty gifts", because this is what we think you get from the ruling social democrats that receive support from the center right.

Here is the video: https://youtu.be/jKmPgxLVcXs

And the song is on streaming services from today, eg Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/1fzuAwte ... dg2eQ3_0Yg

Produced with only free software: MusE, Calf plugins, Dragonfly reverb, Surge.

Composition/keyboards by Staffan "Lars Domino" Melin (that is me)
Guitars by Mats "Palats" Källblad
Voice by Kristian "Kristall" Svensson
Åsa "Paljett" Bällsten is also a member and she performs the lyrics on "Julens färg är röd", the second track of the single.

:D I am happy you like it!

There is now a short playlist on YouTube with two other songs, the only I've made videos to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKmPgxL ... j_tTMn6W9t

Also, on Spotify the single contains two additional tracks (the same as the videos).

We made a record a while ago but I don't think it is available online anywhere (and it is not made with FLOSS). But PM me with your email and I can send you the songs if you like!

Oh. my. god. This is absolutely god damn awful
I mean that in the best possible way. You really captured the Dansband formula!
Love the non traditional lyrics :)

In the video, is that you guys for real??

To give some more background for the uninitiated (i.e. non Swedes). Dansbandsmusik is functional music, it's purpose is pair dance (usually foxtrot), not really meant to listen to, even though lots of people of course do. As such it is by design very simple and usually have similar tempo.
I can understand @OccinticLady 's reaction. It is upbeat and happy. At least in small doses :)

The Z at the end of the band name (which 90% of dansband have) was apparently born in the 70s when the band Lasse Stefanz were playing at a festival with several acts. There was a billboard outside with all the band names in those movable letters that were popular. And as it happens there were a lot of S:es used so when they got to Lasse Stefans they ran out, so it became Lasse Stefanz. The rest is history.

Sure is! :) It is from a gig over 10 years ago, another song, so the lip sync is quite bad! But I used what I had! :)

Thanks for listening and the explanations! I didn't know that about the Z's. :)

Is that genre still popular? I was reminded of some of the better kind of German Schlager. But schlager from about 30-40 years ago, where there were still semblences of class. :) Hm, give me a Swedish part and I can see myself dancing to that with pleasure. There's a good mood and a comfortable warmth to it.

Thanks for listening and commenting @jeanette_c! Yes, it is still very popular, and can understand the similarities to some German schlager. I am glad it makes you want to dance! :D

I read the Schlager comment before listening to it and that scared me. No offense to the culture of @jeanette_c and other Germans (I feel the same about some Italian folk music like "liscio") but it's one of the few genres which I cannot absolutely digest

And indeed, good friend, I think you made the first track that made me feel uneasy  but I think this speaks volumes about your versatility, which I always admired :D
