Uphill
Hey hey, here's another track entirely done with LinuxSampler and the samples Loopop provided for the "Mega contest". This was the first piece I recorded and then kept back as "too obvious". The melody is played on the toms of a TR-606-like drum module, which was the inspiration:
https://youtu.be/g6u2bsV7KfA
It has a nice easy-going b-part. The samples used span the range of synths from the modern digital UDO Super 6, to the old-style digital Waldorf M, to 6m0d6 and Erica Synth Perkons HD-01 eurorack drum modules to the analogue polyphonic DreadBox Nymphes and some weird and wonderful Doepfer. All packed together in an electronic piece to get your feet tapping, I hope.
Enjoy and have a nice Sunday, Jeanette

Re: Uphill
Nice stuff, I really enjoyed this one. The key change at 0:42 really does give an "uphill" feeling like the title. The percussion is also interesting. And the strings add a lot to the atmosphere.

Re: Uphill
Thanks @tenaba . The percussion were partly forced together by the selection of samples that were present, but then I could have taken a different route. I enjoyed the srong difference between the slippery and easy-going 606 sound and the gnarly, dirty and heavy sound of the Perkons. That machine owes *A LOT* of its sound to distortion and other mangling, IIRC. As a rule, I'm not a fan of theirs, but sometimes it makes a difference being able to "play" an instrument, even a sound.

Re: Uphill
I enjoy the way the song builds, avoiding repetitious parts, with a range of accents
along the way that keep the curiosity strong for what's next. I think when the melody changes to the vocal-pad sound, some fanfare to prepare the way for the change, would be fun. I love your string arrangements,
lots of polish throughout. The song reminded me of the very happy 'feel' in Vas Adalante, the triumphant theme song at the end of the movie 'Jet Lag'.

Re: Uphill
Very nice choice of sounds, as usual. You are a masterful arranger! The composition is very nice and the percussive melody is very nice and old-school. The piece never gets boring!

Re: Uphill
Thanks @oscillator ! It was fun to do. It only took about an afternoon or a little more. It was fun to run with the immediate inspiration and have a good technical day. Riding the flow is such a lovely experience.
I'm just glad no one compared the second part to xmas bells, as a friend of mine did. I'm still debating whether to remove her from my nonexistent holiday card list. Christmas? Bah! Humbug!

Re: Uphill
Thanks for the compliment. Although this is somewhat OT. I have wondered for a while if DecentSampler can also work on the commandline? It being cross platform, I know that it has a GUI, but GUIs really aren't my thing. The instruments sound nice and I've heard that there's a good and growing collection of DS libraries.glowrak guy wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 1:01 am These are a few DecentSampler sounds that I think you'd enjoy, maybe even integrate them

I just unarchived the latest DecentSampler version and tried the standalone version:jeanette_c wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 9:56 amThanks for the compliment. Although this is somewhat OT. /home/me/Decent_Sampler-1.3.4-Linux-x86_64/DecentSampler /home/me/Documents/"Array M'Bira (DS)/M'Bira Mics Single.dspreset"
and it works, so it seems you can command the standalone with a path to a preset, and the gui opens with the sound loaded.
The gui only has a few large dials, a pair of sliders for volume/tuning, a virtual keyboard with mapped samples in blue, a preset browser, and a settings button. The M'bira set has 7 dials, most have fewer, as there are a limited number of supported parameters, and lots of new samplists who are also new to gui designs, and only providing crucial parameters.
Cheers

Re: Uphill
Deep digital travel... Powerful rhythmic, the melody is a bit like Jean Michel Jarre.
Atmosphere of the modern mind imbued with danger and potential threats, I hear it in the music - the movement of antimatter and the dark energy of space. But the sun breaks through the clouds, every day it breaks the gloomy veil, carrying people the heavenly fire of life.

Re: Uphill
Very nice track, @jeanette_c. Good from start to finish, and I like the percussive melody. You did a good job of making a sonic "home" for the TR-606 toms to live in.

Re: Uphill
They really jumped out at me. It was literally the first idea I had when I listened through the whole sample set of Loopop. I just postponed tis, in favour of "the queen is dead" becasue it sounded much too obvious. Itwas done in just a day from start to finish, and that includes my obscure workflow.
