The queen's fugue

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey,
here is the queen's fugue:
https://youtu.be/cIF0JocnaDA
It's a complete three part fugue, expanded from the fughetta - or whatever - in my last piece "The queen is dead":
https://youtu.be/otTwVsenZ0I
This time I did not use the samples supplied by Loopop, which were part of his competition (mega contest). Instead I used my own hardware synthesizers, a lot of automation in my DAW. Towards the end it grows into a four part fugue, I suppose, seeing that the fourth voice is a variation on the leading motif, played as closed voicing. I think this is the proper term.
I did use the Waldorf Microwave Xt as a hommage to the main lead sound in "the queen is dead", which was sampled from the new Waldorf M, wavetable synthesizer. The remainder of the arrangement is purely analogue, drawing on both west and east coast synthesis.
Sahre and enjoy and best wishes, Jeanette

Hi,
I'm detecting a pattern, here. Are you Princess J, daughter to Queen W?
Wow! This is just super.
Is this something from your hand?
Thanks for posting....

Hi Melissa,
now I am nobled, to be called the daughter of queen W. I only wish. She had proper training and - of course - needed much more dedication and technical know how to perform her pieces.
I rarely cover anything. If so, it's a bit of Bach, which I would note, credit where credit's due. :) This piece, as well as the queen is dead I have composed myself. Again, I am honoured that they would sound like compositions by a "proper composer". Thanks for commenting!
Best wishes, Jeanette

Very nice, @jeanette_c. This took me back to my teenage years listening to Carlos on vinyl. You could almost have used a modular hardware synth for this -- your sounds are so classic.

I have toyed around with fugue writing, but it's honestly quite intimidating and I've never gotten past the intro. Props to you for making it happen.

This was a fun listen, especially after my wife showed me a video of The Queen dancing her some hiphop
I'm the last person to consult about a fugue or anything classical, but here are my un-theory thoughts (and yes, you can snicker at me!):
It felt like it needed some syncopation, which would I think enhance the playfulness.
Perhaps a 5% speedup, after most parts have been introduced?
The very first sound seemed to get lost when the second one came in.

I think one of those Queen's men in the tall black hats grinned a bit, when he heard this 8)
Cheers

Thanks a lot @milo for the kind words! I, too, have despaired of that for a long time. Only then to discover that it isn't as hard a s all that. It's a bit like puzzling or solving mathematical problems. Being familiar with the sound of fugues doesn't hurt at all though. :) Let's not forget tht I've tried for a long time and finally began with two part counterpunctual motives, slowly crossing the border into three part territory. So don't give up and don't let yourself be intimidated!
Thanks again for the nice feedback.

As @milo I also was reminded of Carlos "Switched on Bach" which I borrowed on vinyl from the public library! :)

I am impressed! The quick "arp" sound at 2:20 was amazing!

Very enjoyable!
