The queen is dead (synthetic orchestral piece)

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, I have just released a new track: The queen is dead
https://youtu.be/otTwVsenZ0I
It's a piece walking the narrow line between soundtrack and baroque orchestra, with a proper, if short, little fugue in the middle. As a sound engine it uses only LinuxSampler with a sample pack released by Loopop for a competition, the "mega contest" with synth samples from Superbooth 2021.
I have also created a kind of "making off" or walkthrough, talking about the writing, recording and mixign with my commandline tools:
https://youtu.be/TZBVGK_z0H0
Additionally, you can download the MIDI/sequencing session in Midish, with a printed out MIDI file, LinuxSampler LSCP script, listing the used samples and some more info:
http://juliencoder.de/sound/the_queen_is_dead.zip
The production is quite traditional, if not conservatibve, but not simple. This time using a lot of automation, which in Nama looks like spaghetti on steroids. :)
Share and enjoy! Jeanette

I don't think so. If I had to choose a real queen, I'd probably join Purcell with Mary II. Luckily queen Wendy the first of Moog Island is still alive. :) So let's keep it a general sentiment.

I was expecting a Smiths cover at first, but the sound is much closer to Wendy Carlos. Nice composition.

I agree with @milo - it takes on a very Wendy Carlos vibe.
My expectation was that it's not my kind of thing, but hey, I'll take a moment to check it out... and then I really liked it :)
I'm slow, but I get there eventually.

Many thanks, James, for persisting. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Thanks also for following me. I think that was you. :)
Best wishes, Jeanette

Thank you @milo , I'm glad it's closer to Wendy Carlos than to the Smiths. I just listened to the piece. It has its moments and some interesting harmonies, which I didn't expect... :)

Jeanette, what is your musical background? I'm curious, because the counterpoint circa 1:25 is rather good, and suggests you've had some classical training.

BTW, I'm a classically trained pianist since the age of 7, and was a music major in college. Here's one of mine:

Hi @j_e_f_f_g , thanks for sharing your composition. It was an interesting listen.
I am not a classical pianist as such. had private lessons and for a few years I did play Bach. Beyond that I am self-tought. I picked up baroque forms from my lessons and the pieces that I played. I never attended a public or official music schoool though. I did start with keyboard lessons, playing popular tnes of yesteryear. :) I grew up with electronic dance music and somewhat more electronic music influenced partly by baroque and church music, i.e. Ace of Base and ABBA. :)
I was always interested in the theory, but never enough to properly study it. There were so many other things leading me astray, like programming, writing poems, living and prog. :)
Best wishes, Jeanette

Nice work, would fit perfectly as the soundtrack for an 80s fantasy movie :D

Not surprising. I gave some of your other pieces a listen and I heard more counterpoint.

That's surprising given the level of sophistication of your arrangements, not only in the use of techniques such as counterpoint, but also in the complexity of the chord progressions. You used pivot tones to breeze through a series of key changes. And even threw in a deceptive cadence. You don't hear this stuff from untrained composers.

Picked up the download from 'over there'.
Quite surprising and very enjoyable. Definitely a hint of early Wendy Carlos :)

I just can't resist. :) Once I was introduced to it, I felt that it gave more depth and heightened tension. As you might also tell, I love extremes.

Thanks a lot. See and there my vocabulary is stretched to breaking point. I never managed to educate myself systematically, which would have been far easier and quicker. Instead I learnt by imitating and experimentation. You will have noticed, I assume, that I deviate from proper classical or baroque composition in many ways and that is - mostly - not by choice. :)
