Gethsemane

Post by milo »

My son Johann did another song pretty much by himself: https://sanderson.band/2021/08/22/gethsemane-2021/

It is a Christian children's song which he learned in his church class a few years ago. When he was about 10 he did his first solo recording of this song using Ardour. I basically logging him in to the studio computer, told him to knock himself out, and when I came back a couple of hours later he had done this amazing a capella arrangement without a metronome or pitch reference.

This year he decided to revisit the song and do a better recording, and he really delivered! This version includes a piano and strings, and the vocal arrangement is ten times better than his old version. I made a few coaching suggestions to the arrangement and mastering here and there, but I can't take much credit for this song other than as a mentor.

Wow, beautifully done. On the production side, I liked how panning was used to distinguish the different vocal tracks. I was surprised to see x42-Autotune in the list, I didn't notice the usual robotic sound often associated with autotune. What SFZ samples did he use? I would guess Virtual Playing Orchestra, but I'm not sure.

Yes, Virtual Playing Orchestra and Salamander piano. I'm not sure why he needed autotune, because I thought it sounded pretty good without it, but he had it on all of the backing vocal tracks.

I'm not familiar with the source material, but the song is beautiful and I enjoyed it! Curious about the autotune plugin, especially considering that, as Michael wrote, it really isn't noticeable: if it's providing some benefit, I'll have to give it a try.

I'd only suggest using something different for strings, as I don't think VPO was 100% suited here: for slow strings as they're written in this piece, I'd recommend KBH Ultima Strings instead, as I've used them in similar contexts (e.g., Lies, Out of the void) and I think they're quite effective despite being a small-ish soundfont. In case you decide to give it a try, just beware that it sounds one octave below what you play/write, as it was originally meant as as a violas/cellos ensemble even though it can go higher than that.

Thanks. I will check out KBH Ultima strings.

I asked him about the autotune, and he just shrugged his shoulders. "It was to keep everything in tune," he said. Whatever.

You have a musical family. :) Very well done, especially considering that it was written on the spot. Johann has a nice voice!
