Fade To Grey, looking for feedback

Post by Gps »

Hi Guys

I finally have something to show (listen to).

Edit: Link to track
https://soundcloud.com/user586365033/fade-to-grey

For those that followed my other topic on this track, left to do, the wau wau effect. Maybe one day, after I find a bit of motivation to not quit yet)

But for now very interested in what you guys think of it.

Big thank to rghvdberg for the help with the piano part, and all the others who helped.

I am a bit disappointed on how much the lyrics of the original paint the track. But since mine is instrumental, no lyrics.
(Could call it a karaoke version)

Feel free to be critical, I usual learn the most from that.

(One man on a loney platform
One case sitting by his site
Two eyes starring cold and silent
Shows fear when as he turn to hide

If only I could sing in tune, I already know the lyrics. :P

I also enjoyed it very much. I didn't listen to the origtinal Visage track, so I won't compare the two. But your version is very nice. It has a very warm and analogue flair underneath the coldness of the track itself.
Perhaps I would have mixed the piano even more softly, but that's purely a matter of taste, not technique.
Could you give us a run down of the synthesizers you used? I like the vocoder/choir sound and the marimba like sound in particular.
Perhaps you could give a vocoder rendition of the lyrics at one point. It would suite the song nicely. :)

Thank you, well here it goes.

Bassline, zynaddsubfx, a brass preset, twice, panned different. ( thank you Chris Payne for explaining this, Chris Payne is the person who started this track. The minimoog was missing so he had to use a poly moog)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmF_jeokUX8

Choir sound, again zynaddsubfx.

Then the part at 1min 20 and on, I hope your sitting down. :P

Bass line still the same 2 zasfx, then a chord progression, zynaddsubfx twice Jarre strings preset and a saw preset.

Then the melody going down the scale, zynaddsubfx twice, Synth 1 and a polymoog vst.

A rendition of the lyrics at 0.44 the bell sound is zynaddsubfx again.

The piano is a vst, 4 front piano.

If you have LMMS installed I can share the file. If not I might be able to send a midi file, but I doubt that will do much
,because I think the name of all the synths will get lost.

Then at the end were the track goes into a repeat, DSK strings plays the chello like sound.

The rising sound is a chord with pitch automation.

The piano part is not in the original, nor is the chord progression at 5.24. That progression is a bit from me, and a bit from Visage. :)

Thanks @Gps . I don't know why I'm still surprised by the variety of Zyn/Yoshimi, but I am. Great work and good arrangement!

I watched an interview with Armin van Buuren.

The thing I noticed, is that he was layering a lot, 5 - 6 zynths for one sound.

Before this I always thought it was wrong to use that many synths for only one sound.

Thank you, but I am surprised not many people here seem to know the original. :)

This version, an extended version inspired me the most.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbMAY2Mx1bE

But this is the hit as it was in the charts:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMPC8QJF6sI

That weird sound is a polymoog. Vox humana preset or how ever you spell that.

I did find a polymoog vst but it has some issues under Linux. All labels from the knobs are missing.
The default sound it produces though, already comes close.

https://plugins4free.com/plugin/2649/

It has no presets though, like the real polymoog has.
