c-drone - Echoes of India
I never was in India, but I know about echoes - this sketch http://alooshu.byethost17.com/c-drone.mp3 is featuring Steve Harris' Delayorama plugin. It is also featuring an interesting guitar tuning a friend of mine learned when studying history of music at university, and they had a Hindu professor who had thought about how to approximate the indian approach to music on a guitar. It is, bottom to top, CGDGCD, or 5th 5th 4th 4th 2nd . One was supposed to just slowly pick the bottom 3 strings as if it was a Tanpura, then, when inspiration came, begin developing lines on the top 3 strings. I've done not exactly that, but with delayorama's sound-on-sound, plus open tuning in these intervals, I found it easy to slip into the same headspace as when I'm listening to - would you guess who?

Re: c-drone - Echoes of India
Thank you for the praise . People around me at this time, also seem to like the piece, and so do I.
It is passed through an eq, a compressor, and a reverb.
If, on my clyp it account in the footer, you search for a tune called 'street', you can hear the instrument in a more raw form, it's me busking with the Irish Whistle, as it is also called, but as you hear, doing relatively un-irish things with it.
That's the Tin Whistle, actually a somewhat rare one that Hohner had made in the 1970's? in South Africa, and exactly the Bb model that's in use for a type of Dixie Jazz called 'Kwela' there. I'm using it because, the tune being in C minor, a Bb whistle is offering good scales to use.

Re: c-drone - Echoes of India
....(goes to tune guitar to CGDGCD)...
Really nice. I'm listening on laptop speakers at the moment, so plan to stick it on the stereo at a later date to have a proper listen.
I'm sure this is very personal thing, so don't take too much notice of it - I wanted to hear more of the guitar - I really like the backing.
For me the whistle is great and essential, but there were a couple of places where I wanted less - I'd like to see it weave in and out a bit more rather than dominate quite so much. That is very nit picky though. It's well recorded, sounds great, and is really interesting - thanks for sharing - and I will be experimenting with that tuning!

if I'd remix it, that's one of the things I might do myself. Small speakers accentuate it, I did skip listening on phones and tablets with this mix, but it's good practice to test that, too

Ravi Shankar? I only say that because he's the only Indian musician I have spent much time listening to. (Norah Jones doesn't count.)forestandgarden wrote: ↑Sun May 23, 2021 7:32 pm... I found it easy to slip into the same headspace as when I'm listening to - would you guess who?
I enjoyed this a lot. It sounds like an 80's-90's new age piece from back when cultural appropriation was all the rage. I still listen to those old albums!

Ok, I'll let the cat out of the bag then - low tuned acoustic, lots of pure intervals like 5ths, long sound-on-sound delays, lots of time and space for subtle developments - Steve Tibbets (e.g. watch https://stevetibbetts.com/walking/ ). An inspiring artist on several planes - compositional, improvisational, approach to the instrument, sound & sound engineering..
And yeah, couldn't agree more - must be on guard lest the chinese steal the banjo or appropiate americana music, the world's a dangerous place. Jodelverbot needed if cultural purity is to be preserved, Jawohl!
But tbh, I didn't meet many people trying to lecture me on that topic, so I should be careful not to defend against an attack that hasn't happened, effectively becoming what I criticise
Music remains the best & most universal safespace, I guess I better stick to that

Just to be clear, I think there are times when cultural appropriation can be hurtful, but your song is not one of those times. I agree that music is where we share the most, and I think it helps us appreciate how wonderful and diverse the world is. That's why I still like those old new age albums.

Re: c-drone - Echoes of India
I really hope we won't be called out on cultural appropriation in music, as I've done my share quite a lot this past couple of years!
Jokes apart, I love the atmospheric vibe of the whole track, and the picture the pad and guitars paint in the background: the flute on top (or tin whistle) is amazing, and something no plugin could ever give... I do envy your ability to play it, it's a beautiful instrument.

Liked this a lot, very good playing and arrangement/development over time! I could easily imagine this to some widescreen nature photography!
