4 on the floor lydian mode fun
Here it is: http://alooshu.byethost17.com/practice.mp3 , and at that host, you'll need javascript enabled to make it to the real file.
Just another snapshot into me having fun, rehearsing by improvising over small loops, this time it's Reaper running MIDI bass and drum, then improvising with my Carla fx rack, recording 2 guitars into Reaper for looping, then just having a go, with projectm-jack getting me into the mood.
The final recording is with jack_capture, adding fades & exporting with Audacity later, and I really dig the spontaneity of that, over recording into a DAW and mixing, it's like back to pressing REC on the cassette deck.

It flows very nicely

Oh, that sounds great. Somehow reminds Dream Theater or some other prog metal stuff.forestandgarden wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 11:52 pm Just another snapshot into me having fun, rehearsing by improvising over small loops, this time it's Reaper running MIDI bass and drum, then improvising with my Carla fx rack, recording 2 guitars into Reaper for looping, then just having a go, with projectm-jack getting me into the mood.

Very nice jam and fun to listen to. Man, you tear it up on the guitar!
I don't think this qualifies as a 4 on the floor, though. Your kick drum hits on the 1st and 3rd beats, and a 4 on the floor should hit all 4. See here:

Very cool! Not sure what's trailing the guitar when you play it (feels like a vocal echo of some sort, part of the processing?) but it's really neat.
It has the vibe of a rock-fusion piece, even though it's not fusion itself: sound-wise it reminds me a lot of Gamalon, a fusion band from late 80s/early 90s that I loved (Aerial View was a fantastic album).

Re: 4 on the floor lydian mode fun
That could be two things, 1) a guitar synth, GxTuner for guit-to-midi, ZynAddSubFx with modded FM Trumpet sound 1 oct up and generous portamento (mix of Metheny's and Satriani's approach to a synth voice added, if you like); 2) more probably, one channel of my setup that I'm working on a lot, and that's meant to 'fly in' overtones on the guitar's decay slope, and that is complex. Current setup is, IIRC, a gate and a delay into the sidechain, to cut off guitar attack transient, a bandpass on high mids, a compressor sidechained with the original guitar and made pump-y/duck-y, a reverb with only wet out, into a GxAmplifier followed by a harmonic enhancer, another gate sidechained from the raw guitar so that this high gain chain is softly cutting off before it's getting noisy, and last, a vibrato. Together with the main lead sound, which is stereo-i-fied with milisecond delays, this can give a gentle chorus friction (there's a separate clean chorus channel, too), but more importantly, the impression that the sound zooms from a wide stereo base towards a centered trail, in mono.
On this track http://alooshu.byethost17.com/emptinessimpro.mp3 , you can hear the same multichannel software guitar fx rack at work in a less busy context, there's also some ducking per sidechained ZamComp going on between the lead channel and the clean chorus channel, furthermore, the lead channel is having a carefully tuned GxExpander, so that only from a certain threshold on, and with a bit of knee, the dist channel is opening, and at the same time, ducking the clean chan, so that playing technique is influencing the result a lot.
Ok then, I was rather using a definition of 'All 4/4 emphasisized, and nothing else', the bass is doing a 4/4 pump, the kick isn't even on the 3, just the snare, it's the most simple stomp one could think of, and that's what I wanted. Except for some sort of elektro-clave, which I haven't even bothered to vary bar to bar. What I'm finding interesting, is how engaging that beat is, and I haven't humanized it, or brought life into the hi hat by varying its velocity. There's a limiter there, tuned to be a little audible.
Thanks for the compliments

Re: 4 on the floor lydian mode fun
Nice. The lydian mode reminds me of Frank Zappa.
I hear the beat as 4/4 and the bass as eighth notes, so I hear the bass drum on beats 1 and 3 and the snare on beats 2 and 4. Usually the snare to me defines where 2 and 4 are. If you hear the bass as quarter notes, then the drums are half time. It's up to you of course -- you're the composer

Academic arguments aside, it is a really nice beat. It makes a perfect foundation for that awesome guitar/synth patch.
