From the starlight (dark synth impro/soundtrack)

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, I just pushed "from the starlight" to Youtube:
https://youtu.be/ul570vi8W58
It's a dark'ish kind of synthesizer soundtrack, with touch of Vangelis SciFi. :) It could have been recorded "live", once all the sequences were set up, but I wanted a little more control over some sound aspects. :)
On the software side I used Yoshimi for the pad bass and Hexter for the tinkly bell. Plus some reverb, EQ and compression in the production. In hardware: Arturia MiniBrute 2s and Make Noise 0-coast foor arpeggios, Behringer Neutron for bass, Behringer RD-8 for drums and the DSI/Sequential Prophet-12 for the lead and Waldorf Microwave XT for the pad. So really a sound per synth setup. :)
Best wishes and enjoy, Jeanette

More than Vangelis, this reminded me a lot of Giorgio Moroder's soundtracks, like the one from The Neverending Story.

Absolutely love Giorgione and Vangelis, absolutely loved this track! :D

Thanks @Basslint ! I wasn't aware of Giorgio Moroder as a film composer. I have to look out for that. Not much of a film person. But maybe I can find an audio described version of the neverending story.

Giorgio won many Oscars as a film composer. You certainly know many of his film songs like "Flashdance...What a feeling" with Irene Cara, "Take my breath away" with Berlin, "Danger Zone" with Kenny Loggins and one of my personal (and obscure) favorites, "Together in Electric Dreams" with Philip Oakey.

@jeanette_c you can listen to the Neverending Story soundtrack alone and I think you will like it a lot! :D

Great track! Reminds me on the Tim Thaler soundtrack. The solo synth sounds quite clean, a little bit more dirt (maybe also slight de-tuning and tape effects) would fit very well. Mix is well balanced too except that I would increase the bass! Is there reverb on the bass?

Yes @Lilith there is some reverb on the bass as well.
With the point of more dirt and "analogue" feel, I see where you're coming from. It's never been my forte though. :)

I was expecting dark ambient (which isn't what is written in the title, though, so that was my fault  ), so I was a bit surprised, but I did like it, especially since it does have that 80s music soundtrack vibe I've always loved!

One thing that puzzled me is that it seems a bit dissonant ~3:42 though? Like a note a semitone too high too early? (the same note does fit the chord change at 3:46) Was that on purpose?

Doesn't come across as dark at all to me - just a very nice quirky sound :D

Ah, you found me out. I had just lost my place, being in a trance. :) Doing it again, I would probably have lost the mood. But of course we will tell everyone that it was intentional for reasons of quirkiness. :)

Yes, I can also hear Neverending Story in this. I really like the expressive lead synth.

Great stuff @jeanette_c!

Harmonics are top notch, as are the sounds! It led me to remember a lot of 70s synth music I have on LP... ah, those were the days! :)

My favorite part is around the 2 minute mark.
