Welcome to Neptune (3d audio)

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, welcome to Neptune is - after a long time - another 3d biinaural audio soundscape or scene. It's best listened to on headphones:
https://youtu.be/U6GKSp1_vT8
It was all based on the short text I am reading, an impression I had noted on some journey or other, though not to Neptune. :)
The sounds are completely synthesized in Csound, but some are modelled on recordings of Voyager II when it had passed the planet. These would be audio translations of different instruments onboard the space probe. Conceptually the piece slowly takes the listener from free space through the layers of the atmosphere right down to the core of the planet. That is how the piece was organised or sequenced.
The image was created in POV-Ray again. I could have taken a CC licensed image of Neptune, but it fit to synthesize the image, when the sound was all synthesized too. :)
Enjoy and best stay on earth! :) Jeanette

Really interesting choice of software. I had to look up Csound, looks pretty complex, but I like what you did with it.

There's too much for me to address every aspect of this track individually, but I liked basically all the choices you made with regards to effects and atmosphere! The narration is nice as well. And of course, the noise clipping hard and then near-silence is also a very nice way to wrap things up. Great stuff!

I make music as Tenaba! Bandcamp

Wow, this is way beyond my pop-formed brains but I really appreciate the idea :D

Thanks everyone. :) I know that it is somewhat weird, but so is the text. :) I thought I should paste it here, since part of it gets lost "in translation". :)
Marvelled at, from the warm embrace of our mother star: so pretty are the delicate rings and the azure glimmer;
But the blue aloofness will crystallise your mind in foreign terror,
while gaseous pressures will crush your flesh and cruel storms of liquid ices and revolting poisons will fill your lungs;
thus removed from home, you will die alone on an alien, terrifying world, far away from hope.
This is the reality of Neptune, my child.

This had a very strong emotional impact!! There is a sense of ... ethereal unease? I'm not sure exactly what words to use here.

I felt completely enveloped by this piece. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you very much for sharing your impression. I am glad that you perceived this feeling, since it seems to be close to the emotion I wanted to transport.
