Change (covering my 17-year-old self)

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, I had that idea for a while. The song existed on tape, even though tape was on its way out when I did it. :)

I had the chance to record change in a small studio at the time. This resembles the original closely in most ways, even using the basic Roland JV-1080 909 kkit without adaptations. In the original I used the JV patch Raggatronic as the main sound. I have that too, but used a copy of that sound I made on another virtual analogue synth. The lyrics had to be rewritten, because they were very much below standard. :) I tried to keep in the style and basic register of the original though.
I hope you enjoy it.
Best wishes, Jeanette

As I said 'elsewhere' the 17yo shines though in this. Nicely done.

Nice track. I also like to revisit my old teenage compositions to see if I can finally get the definitive recording. My former self was really creative in ways that sometimes surprise me now that I know more about music composition.

@milo with a few pieces it can be a fascinating trip down memory lane. In this instant, I just had the feeling that it was a catchy tune and a bit of a vocal excercise for the next track. Well, the jury is still out on that. It should be there by the end of the week. :)

Very solid euro piece! I think revisiting things from youth can be very hard emotionally. Thank you for showing us it's possible :D

Wow, sounds really like a synth fest. This reminds me a lot the songs I heard in the radio in my 18's. Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, people like that.

Really cool to revisit something you did before with a more mature look. I liked it.

I noticed the instruments are very lower than the voice sometimes. I could not hear the arrangement as well as I'd liked.

Thanks @pdechery ! I know mixing with vocals is not my forte. I have to work on it. As you can hear I'm not a good vocalist and so reframed from singing for a long time.
BTW. seeing that I remade this song from a copy on tape, it's a good moment to honour and thank Lou Ottens inventor of the music casette who just died aged 94.

I've just heard it again. The song is great and deserved to be re-recorded. I liked the synth tones (I figure everything in there must be synths) and the harmonies.

@pdechery , yes it's all synths. A TR-909 drumkit (samples from a Roland JV module). The choir is a layering of Yoshimi choir and Korg Triton choir, the rest is analogue or analogue hybrid. Oh yes, and the orchestral hit is a sound from the Roland module. I think it's the same as in the original recording, too. :)
And thanks again for the kind feedback and praise.
