Leaving, To Go To High School
I just posted a song that I recorded with my daughter. She rewrote the lyrics of "Leaving, On a Jet Plane" to be a parody about going back to school during a pandemic after being out of the building for nearly 6 months: https://sanderson.band/2020/08/25/leavi ... gh-school/
I am particularly pleased with how the layered backing vocals turned out. This girl has a great blending voice! She has been reluctant to participate in family recording projects before, but I think she's hooked now.
Enjoy!
EDIT: one other thing I wanted to mention is that I didn't use a metronome or click track. This was inspired by the recent track posted by @jonetsu: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=21650
I wanted to get a more organic sound, and I think it worked. Thanks for the inspiration!

I think I would have to resort to bribery to get my daughter to play violin on my music! That is really great that you were able to produce some music with your daughter. I can't imagine how hard it must be for kids returning to school right now. We are lucky to have virtual school options for our kids... Of course, that has its own challenges.

It almost made me cry too, the verse about high school being a big charade had me laughing so hard that I had to hold back the tears.

Your daughter has a good natural vibrato and I think she might have a talent for opera singing.
Above all, I think the choice of not using a metronome really paid off! That kind of stuff should have no place outside of music trying to be mechanical on purpose.

Thanks for the listens, and for the kind words. They really made Marie smile!
With regard to metronomes, I agree in principle. But for practical purposes I am stuck using computer timing pretty much whenever I have a non-trivial midi track in a project, simply because my keyboard skills are not up to snuff. And that includes midi drums. I suppose I could get away with playing chords on a pad synth or maybe a shaker or tambourine sound in free time on a midi track.
I have an idea for an a capella hymn arrangement with a variable tempo, which I will try to pull off in Ardour without a metronome. I'm thinking about recording my own click track in free time using my fingernail on the desktop in a separate microphone as I sing the template vocal track. Wish me luck!

I didn't know the original song, but I like your version of it: and your daughter has a beautiful voice! Is it an ukulele playing in the background?

This song is a deep part of my childhood musical experience. It's not my favorite John Denver song, but it's one of his classics. Actually the most famous recording of it was done by Peter, Paul, and Mary, but here's the best version recorded by Denver: https://youtu.be/k9sf7C7D3nk
The other, higher-pitched instrument is a mandolin. There is also a second guitar in the choruses that plays chords on the downbeat, which Marie played.

This is simply brilliant!
You have a very talented family... I wonder where they get it from
P.S.
She also has a lovely voice.
