About time I put something here again

Post by folderol »

This is my contribution to the KVR Music Cafe monthly contest (which I've rather neglected lately). It is totally out of my comfort zone, and does some rather sneaky tricks with MIDI-learn on LFOs and filters.
So please enjoy Submundo :D

What do you mean? Of course it's all Yoshimi

Nice piece, it feels like something that could fit in the soundtrack of a videogame, and I'd play that!

I like that one too, but I'd like to hear a harder snare and the sounds that come in at 1:09 are quite unpleasant to my ears as they are really too harsh.

Thanks folks.
@ lilith If you mean that sound that starts just after the lead, I call it bubbles. It's a 'marmite' sound - people seen to either love it or hate it

Yes, that one. On speakers it sounds better than on headphones, but imo there a bit too much at ~1 kHz which sound unpleasant. The sound itself is fine, it's just the frequencies.

Just checked this with a spectrum analyser. It seems this is a victim as much as an offender. This is one of three sounds that conspire to produce these peaks. I can't alter the submission, but after the contest I'll look at doing come careful filtering.

A gentle piece with interesting sounds. I wasn't expecting such a tranquil piece after the sweeping intro. The lead synth hits a few nice riffs here and there. Is that improvised?

Very nice. I guess all Yoshimi means the drums are synthesized; are those shipped as presets yet? :D

Thanks folks - I just got back form a few days low tech holiday :D

@milo Yes the lead was improvised over the percussion and basic chords.

@Basslint All the percussion is indeed from Yoshimi, from the Drums bank. It's a mixture of Natural Drum Kit and Moor Drums

Thanks. I love that picture

I got to number 5 in the KVR contest, out of 19, which I'm well pleased with.
I've also put a new version on soundcloud with a bit of filtering applied between 2 and 3kHz.
