Linux Musicians Playlist

Post by bulevardi »

Hi all !

I'm wondering who of you have their music on Spotify or SoundCloud?

It could be nice to bundle a lot of linux made music into a playlist on e.g. Spotify.

There are lots of musicians who would like to get more exposure.
Together we can do so. If we all stream a playlist with music from us all, (even via overnight streaming while we sleep), our music could get higher/better in the algorithms and get noticed by more people. Some of you get monetized by these streaming services and can maybe earn some money with this some day (although it's not much as most streaming services pay $ 0,00001 per play).

Perhaps it's a good idea if you all post a link to a recent made song you have on Spotify or SoundCloud, in this thread.
Choose a song that you think sounds accessible for a bigger audience so listeners get hooked faster.
(nerdy linux/computer music can maybe sound too mathematic for the average joe)

In the next days or weeks, I'll bundle them in a list
Then I'll share the link to the playlist in this first post of this topic.
Then we all play the list every now and then.

If anyone has a good/original name or title for the list?
If anyone has a good idea for artwork to use?

I'm not really into other platforms like Youtube/Deezer/Tidal/... and so on. If anyone knows to create a linux playlist there too? Feel free to make a topic about it! 8)

It's not easy to come up with one piece. Here's one. It didn't get close to 1000 listens as others did, but it does use exclusively (apart from the drums) a free synth that runs on Linux: u-he's TripleCheese:

"A Case of Käse Part Deux : Planet Gorgonzola"
https://soundcloud.com/nominal6/a-case- ... gorgonzola

Feel free to not include it because it uses a free but not open source synth that runs natively on Linux.

Otherwise there's this one with some 645 listens. It's also on Mike Senior's Cambridge-MT free multitracks projects for people to remix and some people did remixes of it. Someone that has a studio in South West London has also recently asked permission ot include it to promote his mixing services. That one though uses wine-staging/linvst and Windows plugins, along Linux plugins, of course.

"Escape of the Hopping Rhinos"
https://soundcloud.com/nominal6/escape- ... ing-rhinos

There are also so many ... Feel free, if you wish, to peruse the tracks on Soundcloud and choose one.

Cheers.

It's not a problem.
I'm not going to be difficult here if it's not 100% linux. We all use different distros, different daw's, different plugins.
Some with 100% proprietary components of their setup, some with 100% open source, some partly ...
Besides, it's not possible to verify this by listening the audio. Anyways, if it comes from people on this board, there will be at least some tiny bit of linux mood in it.

I know... the reason why I let you guys choose it yourself, is because you know your music.
And what if I get 100 reactions the next days, with each of you offering 10 songs, I'll have to listen to 1000 songs directly to make up my mind. :D

One song per person to start with... later on I'll update the list, maybe each new season an update or new list with the new tracks. I'm not sure yet how it will evolve.
First I'll start with the first list, and we'll see :)

Hi bulevardi

Great idea! A similar idea already exists here: https://discourse.ardour.org/t/spotify-playlist/101298

I produce with Ardour and am on Spotify (and others) here is a song I would submit:
https://open.spotify.com/track/18MQaV1K ... e6kIx_h60A

Hey @ufug !!

You need to be in on this, (he did a great Linux produced album this past year on Spotify)

Hi.

My music is on YouTube and Soundcloud only. Don't have any other accounts to publish some of my music.
If one of my songs would make it into such a playlist, I would like to suggest: The Space Traveller. But there's a lot of more cool songs (almost all from YouTube and Soundcloud) that would be nice to be included into a playlist of Linux made Songs.

I'm using Qtractor only and The Space Traveller song shows pretty much, it's possible to compose, record, produce and to mix 39 minutes songs using Audio plus MIDI in GNU/Linux and Qtractor.

Great idea! I'd offer up this tune of mine for Spotify playlist inclusion: Everton. Not all open source but 100% Linux native tools.

I've gotten take down notices/songs deleted from Soundcloud twice for posting my own work, with no recourse. So no tunes there anymore.

I'm not on Soundcloud since over 2 years or so - tho I did have a collaboration with 'nominal6' aka 'jonetsu' there, see https://soundcloud.com/wjlonien

Made 11 albums on Wikiloops so far, and everything I did was made with Linux and Open Source software. There are others there who are also using/working with Linux, but we're pretty much platform-agnostic over there, it's more about making music together.

So I can't contribute much to your list, sorry...

Cheers,
Wolfgang

I don't have tracks on Spotify, but I shared many on SoundCloud. I agree it's hard to find a single one to highlight, it's like forcing you to choose one of your babies  If I really had to pick one, it would probably be Mary, mainly because it's the most ambitious and "epic" of the bunch, and a personal favourite of mine: it's also 9 minutes long, though, so one that only people with enough patience might enjoy... I see you already added "Out of the Void" to the list, which I guess is fine!

Are these playlists still be maintained? If so, I'd like to share it throughout my networks while I decide on a track to submit for each.

I'd also like to submit "She's Toxic" for Spotify and "Unique" for Soundcloud.
