The Cylinders and the Spheres (binaural 3D scene/drama?)

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, this is a binaural 3D piece, you best listen to it on headphones and, if possible, keep rather still toget the full effect.
https://youtu.be/LGaynaBbTVw
I created this piece as a surreal scene or small drama. The listener hangs in empty air in a huge hall, at the centre of a huge sphere constructed from metal balls connected by wires. The balls can be struck and the wires will sing in the wind. At the front there stands a group of big wooden pipes or clarinets. After being introduc ed they begin a procession around the listener, occasionally firing off table tennis balls in lieu of fireworks. Along the side walls there are metal bars applauding the marching pipes. The big spiralling sound is just there because it's fun. Oh and one of the pipes is rather the clown of the group. :)
The whole piece was realised in Csound and is completely synthesized, no samples were involved. If you are interested you can download the source code and run it yourself:

Lastly, I might take the opportunity to link to my two other 3D pieces, which are more concrete and realistic, perhaps.

I hope you can enjoy it. :)
Best wishes, Jeanette

Sorry for the delay - wanted to listen on headphones before commenting. This is a tour de force of sound design. You are a true sound geek!

I have never used Csound. How much time did it take you to program this piece? What is your workflow when working with it? Do you use a text editor or a specialized Csound programming environment like CsoundQT?

This was very interesting to listen to, and I definitely second the recommendation for using headphones to listen to this one.

About three days. I got a bit confused with my geometry. :) And the full piece took about 30 minutes to render.

I, naturally, just use a normal editor, vim. It is actually an interesting question, whether CsoundQT might be accessible...
Apart from the editor: I usually know what I want, when I begin. So I first do some sound design or choose already existing stuff. Then I have to work on the temporal and geometrical side. For this I really haven't got a fixed workflow yet.
