Rated Blue - "Spanish Moon" Released!
Hi,
I posted last summer about this song but here is an updated Video and new mix that we've released on Spotify.. If you already listened and want to take a pass, thanks and enjoy some of the numerous other great posts down here in the music lounge!
The song was originally recorded live as a trio and we were happy with the sound and version so we went back in and added some acoustic rhythm guitar lots of hand percussion and a touch of Hammond organ to pad out the solos. Although I've lost all objectivity about my involvement in it I do really like the "70's street funk" production sound we got.. It reminds me of 70's band "War" and the modern band "Vulfpeck" (mostly in the drum sounds). It's funny how sometimes "you sound like you sound" regardless of the instrument.. Connor the drummer is playing our little Tama Bop kit and the kick drum is the same size as one of the floor toms on his normal "red Zeppelin" kit but we still got a powerful sound out of the small kit. A new revelation for me was the Audio Assault "Duality Bass Studio" plugin, the miked bass amp tone on this recording was nothing special and Duality really gave it some growl and focus in the mix..
I also redid the Video and had some fun with an old TV overlay... Prolly the only way we'll ever get on TV!!
Here's the video and song link:

Excellent work all around! Top notch performances, great sound and mixing, a little humor in the video. Couldn't stop moving with the groove, something that seems increasing hard to find these days. A lot more than a little feat.
What is the vocal processing you're doing? It sounds very cool but there's something subtle happening besides delay.
Are you gonna sample that kit someday?

Re: Rated Blue - "Spanish Moon" Released!
Thanks Scotty!
Vocals on this are a bit of a clusterf**k.. The original vocal was OK but had a few sub-optimal notes and a lot of guitar and drum bleed going on so I muted it and added a vocal track and redid the vocal and in turn the original vocal was bleeding into the drum mics so it ended up a bit layered sounding and double tracked.. I then did my goofy thing where I duplicate the vocal on another track and pan it, high pass it and raunch it up with some TAP Tube warmth and free drag it to create a delay. So the vocal is the original blended with a dubbed one which is also delayed, all in all it kinda suited the 70's studio vibe and although it's not ideal (lol my vox never will be) I kinda got used to it.
And yessir... My next spare time project is a complete sampling redo of all the AVL Drumkits (v 2.0) including the new l'il Tama kit... Better recorded samples with more mics, more velocity layers per piece, a choice of "Hotrod" hits as well as stick hits and much more I hope!

The bass is pretty good. Round and agile. Don't know the original song, though, so I take it as an original Rated Blue.

Awesome grooooooove y'all are laying down. The B3 is a perfect textured background, and the growly bass sits well.

Sounds very good indeed, Glen. Even through my laptop speakers. Great job all round!

Hmmm. Don't remember this. Like it anyway.
Like the TV playing a scratched film effects too. Mind you I'm old enough to remember the ones with a 9in tube you needed to watch in a darkened room

Amazing track as usual! Vocals remind me a bit of Robby Steinhardt, the violinist and occasional singer of the prog rock band Kansas, especially on their more "direct" tracks from the 70s that I've always loved.
