Four Chords

Post by davephillips »

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_xL1CKLLN0

A simple harmony exercised developed into a little demo for the polyphonic Saws oscillator module from the Squinky Labs plugin for VCV Rack. Sound is from a single instance of Saws, with a bit of chorus and plate reverb. Pitches, rhythms, and some modulation come from an external MIDI sequencer routed into Rack.

Great, full sound out of this patch. Nice! Makes me want to fire up VCV again and play around.

Hi Dave!

I would agree with milo a lot of interesting stuff going on in those patches! Too bad you added the 4th chord though... you could have had a major hit on your hands but you had to get all jazzy!

Saws are not my favorite synth sound. They're kinda like inclined glass surfaces, if that makes any pictorial correlation. They seem fixed in an expression that never changes. And so this is not one of my favorite VCV piece. It'd be interesting to hear the same chords on a grand piano.

That's some mighty tension ~2:53.

VCV is something I've wanted to dig into for... a long time. It always looks a little intimidating, but thanks for the reminder to try it out.

As it happened, the exercise began with Pianoteq but I wanted more timbral variety.

Thanks for lending your ears !

Thanks for checking out the track ! :)

Like any modular, VCV Rack takes some time to get into. No presets (for the most part) but there are many excellent tutorial patches available to get you started. The trick is finding your own way to work with it.

If you do get into it, have fun !

I'm not familiar with VCV, but these are quite nice. The second snippet reminded me of the soundtrack of the movie Black Rain for some reason, which I guess shouldn't surprise me as it was a common sound for many tracks in the 80s.
