In the early 1970s two friends and myself used to play C&W, folk, and easy listening songs. Barrie played bass guitar, I alternated between rhythm guitar and a portable (well, lugable) electronic organ and Ray mostly played lead guitar. Both Barrie and I were the singers too. One of Ray's favourites was Forty Shades of Green, and it was very popular at the venues we played.
Work and such took us in different directions, but we kept loosely in touch. Sadly, we lost Barrie in the early 1980s, and then later Ray too. Unfortunately, we didn't have decent recording kit in those days, and over the years the few I did have disappeared. A few months ago I mentioned this to 'Rustystrings', who I collaborate with from time-to-time. He hadn't heard of Forty Shades, and was quite shocked when I told him it was written by Johnny Cash! Anyway, we put our heads together and this is what we came up with - for me it's a bit of a tribute to my lost friends.

This is lovely! Nicely performed, recorded, and mixed. Is that you singing? That's a solid performance.
This recording is just dripping with affect, like squeezing water from a sponge. You really nailed the emotion of the song.

Re: A song with a bit of history
Thanks for you support and comments guys.
I've sung this plenty of times, but it's not me singing here. Ged has a voice that is much better suited to it, and I wanted whatever was best.

Very nicely done!
Condolences on the loss of your friends, how nice of you to honor their memory like this!
PS, If you hadn't lost the tapes you would most likely be hard pressed to find a cassette player that still had functioning drive belts..

Re: A song with a bit of history
Thanks again. Oh, and actually I still have a working cassette recorder - with a selection of 1960s and early 1970s music
