First time I've written a surf rock piece. Wrote and recorded this little piece today. Trying to get the hang of it

Had some fun putting together surf-type guitar tones and trying out a new (to me) drumkit: the GMkit.

As per usual, I played my "bass" parts on the 8-string. I really ought to get a proper bass at some point.

For me it sounds more like The Shadows than like Surf. Cool anyway.

It's a pretty good piece. While offering such a polished surface it nevertheless hints at some 'mystery' by the choice of chords.

When I read "(surf)", I was wondering if it would have a spring reverb. It sounds like there is no spring reverb, but that's fine.

Some of the solo parts are using an exotic scale. Is that the phrygian mode, or something else? Whatever it is, I like the sound of it!

When creating these patches on my Line 6 POD HD500X, I initially reached for a '63 spring reverb (but of course!). For whatever reason, it wasn't quite doing it for me, and I ended with up with a pitch vibrato into an echo-type reverb.

Thanks, and great question! Not entirely sure how to refer to it modally. I did some poking around on Wikipedia and perhaps those parts can be best described as being in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_minor_scale. I'm leaning on the augmented fourth (D#) and the augmented 7th (G#) for extra color in those parts, so that's my best guess!

Perfectly music! I heard something nostalgic from 70-80th. Bravo!

I dig this piece, and I think you nailed the sound. The guitar is just the right kind of wet, and the drumming patterns have just the right momentum. Very listenable, and interesting all the way through. Your guitar playing is quite good!

Emulating a style is a super fun project, especially when you inevitably end up with something that includes your own personality. Very catchy and nice playing!

As a surf rock fan, I hope you will do more songs in this style!
