501

Post by jonetsu »

"501" is a dark ambient piece that combines the clarity of a well-defined theme with waves of noise, flanked by a somewhat disparate but steady drum.

Comments are welcomed ! Regarding composition, arrangement, mixing, etc.

Cheers.

I've listened to it three times on headphones. Great, but I wouldn't it consider it as DARK ambient.

The drums do not sound so well integrated in the mix, but I can't say why. Maybe making them a little bit louder and lowering the high frequencies will help ... it's just a feeling. Also the low end (low mids) could be a little bit more pronounced.

What about adding e.g. some vinyl crackling or tape sim, etc. to the whole song to give it more warmth, especially at the beginning before the noise sounds come in?

Arrangement and buildup is great!

Thanks for the comments ! The drum was originally too loud, and now it's - and I agree - on the low side. The 'text book' approach in this case would be to add a bit of compression to even the hits and then to raise the volume. What I'm tempted to do is to edit the volume of each drum hit manually although this takes a bit of time. The drum has personality, the goal would be to make it shine a bit better.

I might do that. Right now I have another piece in the mix pipeline that I'd like to post today.

Cheers.

The track reminds me of MASSIVE ATTACK.

I happen to like Massive Attack. Haven't thought about a link there but now that you mention it, there's something.

I rebalanced the drums to take the exceeding ooomph that was not really called for and also made for a more enveloping bass that could better lean into the slow pace. Please take a listen - all comments welcomed ! Same link as above.

Cheers.

Sounds better! There a lot of bass at around 120 Hz which is exactly where I have a room mode. Would be good also to leave the old version (e.g. as private) for comparison.

Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately the previous version is not there anymore. It did not strike me as important to keep anything done before, although that's an interesting idea to quickly backtrack and hear what was modified.

Cheers.
