Piano Test Recording

Post by Michael Willis »

Tonight for the first time I tried recording myself playing an upright piano. After several horrible takes, I captured one that wasn't quite as horrible as the rest

https://instaud.io/2CCK

There it is, no audio processing at all, complete with mistakes, off-center stereo sound, hammers banging, pedals and chair creaking, crickets outside, the clock ticking, and a deep breath at one point (I don't know why! I wasn't playing a wind instrument!) ... Anyway, it's clear that I still have a lot to learn. I'll have to experiment with mic placement, I'll probably have to embrace the fact that I can't avoid all of that ambient noise, and maybe at some point I'll splurge on a better stereo mic setup.

This piece of music has been part of me for ages, probably close to a decade now. I have no idea what to call it, so the name on Instaudio is simply what I got from the Ardour export. At some point I should put it in notation so that it can be performed by a better pianist than me

Thanks for the encouragement. I just need to stop the fear, keep practicing, and record more.

Technicalities aside, that was quite interesting - and probably quite tiring to play!
I think many of us (myself included) don't play things straight through often enough

The chords are all right to make a song. The piano playing throughout a song would be too much, but the chord structure can lend itself to many dressings, as well as the sketched melody.

Cheers.

I picked up a new set of two paired mics this weekend and tried making another piano improv recording:

These mics were supposed to be better than the ones I was using, but I think the noise floor is worse for some reason.

Lovely piece, very emotional!
I don't mind the makeshift recording at all, it's authentic :)
