Molam
A dreamy track with Molam music in it. Enjoy
https://soundcloud.com/vitaminx/molam
This is an older Renoise song I decided to remaster.
The mastering attempt from a year ago is here: http://www.callistix.net/music/molam%20 ... rsion).mp3
I believe that the new version is better
OS: Debian Linux
Audio driver: jack
DAW: Renoise
Instruments: it's all samples
Effects: rubberband (time stretching), Renoise build-in effects, u-he Presswerk and Protoverb
As always I'm happy about your comments and suggestions.
Changelog
1.0 (02/08/2018)
- release version
1.0a (05/08/2018)
- lowered volume of snare
- exchanged snare sample for softer multilayered sample
1.1 (12/08/2018)
- lowered kick drum volume
- slightly lowered hihat volume
- kick, hihat and snare volume automation to be lower at the beginning
- disabled "soft clipping" on master channel
- lowered compressor gain and output on master channel
- added hard limiter at -3db on master channel
- removed 2 repeating pattern (~18s) from first half of song
1.2 (12/08/2018)
- removed some very short notes from bass line, they might sound like unwanted distortion
- added bass distortion automation to distort more in louder parts
1.3 (13/08/2018)
- exchanged protoverb on guitar reverb bus with mpreverb to fight possible distortion
- driving guitar signal hotter into reverb bus to eliminate background noise
1.4 (14/08/2018)
- added compressor to molam track to get rid of master bus maximizer crackle around 3:23s

Re: Molam
This is quite good. The shift at around 3:11 towards the blurred voices singing, which I suppose are morlam/molam (of which I do not know anything but did a quick search) is an excellent transition.
From time to time I do pieces that are made of one gist around which things revolve. "Fog" in the signature below is one of them. So I like that kind of pieces which do not necessarily have any progression into well-cut chord changes and the like, but instead carries on a groove.
I listened to some excerpts of molam music. These guys seems to jam on the same thing for quite some time The music is groovy, but the female voices are sometimes, to my ears, in the Thai language, are a bit too much, and I'm used to some Asian songs. It reminds a bit of some long Indian musical pieces.
I have started a thread some time ago about "International Beats". I'll post a link to molan music there. Feel free to add.
Cheers.

I had a listen and I love the unusual choice of sounds, but still it's very pleasant to hear.jonetsu wrote:"Fog" in the signature below is one of them.

Re: Molam
This is pretty cool and the guitars are killer!! The beginning sounds like from a TARANTINO movie or something short before the massaker starts .
I miss a little some guitar noise orgy later... would perfectly fit and there's some distortion on the left channel at ~0:20 ...
Did you play the bass and the drums on your own?

Hmmm, I've listened to around ~0:20s dozens of times now and I can't hear any distortion. Can anyone else confirm this?lilith wrote:there's some distortion on the left channel at ~0:20
Not on this track. The bass and guitar melodies are programmed, I gave the guitar some vibrato to make it sound natural.lilith wrote:Did you play the bass and the drums on your own?
This is a snippet of the guitar track: http://callistix.net/music/molam_guitar.png

Re: Molam
Ah... you wrote it in the first post. I bought renoise last year, made one song and then moved to Reaper/Ardour.
I like Renoise, but as there was no single post by the dev (s) in the forum since years .... come on ...
@distortion: I'll listen again tomorrow.

Re: Molam
That's unfortunately true, and it's unclear if and when they continue to develop it. There's Lua to extend it if you need to.lilith wrote:I like Renoise, but as there was no single post by the dev (s) in the forum since years
I still find it a great and unique piece of software even though the development is stale.

Re: Molam
I did one piece in Renoise. I still have the hexadecimal codes flashing in my subconcious mind
If you're interested, it's this one:
https://soundcloud.com/nominal6/c2015-19a
It will depend on experience, on abilities, affinities and such. For instance if I program a beat it will very likely sound robotic. I can tap on a conga head, but when it comes down to program a beat, I'm not that good. As in this early piece above. It's funny to hear it today.
This said I do use Redux and find it's quite a good tool. And in Redux I do not mind programming a short sequence when needed.
As for obsolete or not updated plugins, I got two recently that are officially no longer maintained. They are from Linplugs (run through linvst) : CrX and Sax Lab. Sax Lab has pretty good saxophone and flute sounds. And CrX is a good 'little' synth that can contribute to the sound palette with its own character. Obsolete or not update does not necessarily mean not useful. If it works OK after testing then why not ?

The distortion @0:21 is very subtle, but there's something. Doesn't really matter.

Re: Molam
I did some changes to the song, as pointed out in other forums, the new version is here: http://www.callistix.net/music/molam_1.1.wav
I'll upload it to Soundcloud in a few days and when most flaws are fixed.
- lowered kick drum volume
- slightly lowered hihat volume
- kick, hihat and snare volume automation to be lower at the beginning
- disabled "soft clipping" on master channel
- lowered compressor gain and output on master channel
- added hard limiter at -3db on master channel
- removed 2 repeating pattern (~18s) from first half of song
Not sure if the -3db mastering limit removes the noise, please let me know
