Critters - full album

Post by lucidbeaming »

Just released a full-length album of experimental music, a year in the making.

Critters

Made with ZynAddSubFx, Fluidsynth, Guitarix, Audacity, ffmpeg, and a variety of commercial software. I setup 3 Raspberry Pis to run the Linux packages as outboard self-contained gear.

It's a darker album, ambient and glitched. People have said it reminds them of a horror movie soundtrack. Some of the songs use layers of animal sounds recorded at dusk.

Magical atmospheres. Straight from a Guy Maddin film.

I cannot say what I really listened to, probably a mix of this and the previous album, just gave it an hour or two of mixed streaming when I was in town, and over WiFi, had the bandwidth to do so. Now if I remember right, there were some of the sort of intricacies I like, like not too obvious ⅞ rhythms, could it be?
My associations, interestingly, are rather different to the previous feedback: my exposure to movies or television is practically zero, on the other hand, I live away from civilisation, in a very biodiverse forest, so rather than darkness or horror, I hear mainly organic sounds, like, say, dry wood, a lot of space, although it is not clear whether an in- or outdoor one, a dose of artsyness :)
Definitely not any music I'd feel like having lost time with, on the contrary, one is compensated for the interest shown, fresh impressions given, new questions asked, a good degree of authenticity found.

Thank you for taking the time for an extended listen and I appreciate the thoughtful response.

Many of the songs use a combination of organic and synthetic sounds. There are layers of animal sounds and field recordings of environments throughout the second album. I also have sets of effects that use granular synthesis to emulate natural sounds, but with shuffled grains to give it a glitched and disorienting feel.

I grew up in the rural U.S. but live in a large city. My idea of "natural sounds" combines both. I think the layers of technology and broken machinery we take for granted blend with people and animals and weather to become a new kind of natural. A lot of my music deals with that idea and I think you picked up on it.
