Spring Dance of the Crane

Post by tavasti »

I was doing short review/demonstration video of LMMS. I messed up with tech, sound of LMMS was not recorded, and I found out that I can't multitask enough, so that my speaking was 'uummh, uuh, and then we can ...'. So better to do that next time with recording software usage, and speak + edit later. (see viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15688 )

But as result of that failed video, I had something in my LMMS. Trying to keep things simple and compact, I got much more better results than when trying to do some music. With bit more fiddling it ended up as my first real instrumental track. Played some guitar over it, less than 10 times to get some idea what to play.

Recorded with video on one take, without remixing anything. Is it that feeling while playing, or is it getting nervous on 'now I'm recording', but listening afterwards sounds much worse compared how it sounds when just playing.

2 hours fiddling lmms, 10 minutes for getting everything ok for recording (video & guitar), 3 minutes record, maybe 2 hours on video edits. Much more time on mouse than on guitar. Ok, fair enough, I did not spend hours on audio fiddling. Don't know if I should?

Name of the track comes from pictures. I had few pictures of our beautiful nature in early spring, and short video of crane shot with phone from car window on way home. Maybe some day I'll do some mad editing of that to get that crane really dancing?

Pictures & video from Kangasala, Finland april-may 2016

Used software: lmms, guvcview, kdenlive, non-mixer, all running in ubuntu 14.04
Guitar gear: BC Rich Warlock (AEAEAE tuning 10-64 strings), Digitech RP255, Alesis IO2

The sound could be better if the volume of the guitar would be ajusted better on the rest of the music. More then once the guitar sounds that hard that the other music isn't to be heard anymore.
This was a one track recording? If so, i would further elaborate it with multi recordings to edit/master it to a cleaner total.
Yes, every word you say is true. This was done so that I adjusted volume of lmms and guitar when playing, which sounds nice to player, set level so that it won't clip, and then, one take to record all to one track (stereo) directly to video. And then afterwards listening how it ended up, and let it be so.

Good thing on this workflow is minimizing time on computer, but sure, results are not optimal. I suppose my next sw to learn is some decent daw with recording and mixing capabilities, and aiming bit higher. In small steps towards to bit better. This was first step on creating 'real' songs, having something more than plain beat and guitar.

Thanks for honest feedback!

Now I have only backing track available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdzaQJt8X3Y

At least I think this is too boring as is, 'elevator music'. Suggestions for instrument used in 'solo', replacing guitar are welcome. Maybe some 'real instrument' from general soundfont?

Play a second guitar on it?
I was talking about this 'without guitar' version, and considering doing different version, plain 'machine' version, replacing guitar parts with something else.

And sure, next project, I'm aiming to something harder, this came in by accident.
