Can't Find My Way Home

Post by GMaq »

Hi,

I recorded this in Ardour to show my bandmates a trio arrangement idea and I also wanted to try out my new AxeTrak so this recording is the result. It is one of my favourite songs and was originally done by Blind Faith...

Song is here: https://soundcloud.com/glen-macarthur

AxeTrak is here: http://www.axetrak.com/index.asp

If you love real tube tone and are unable to record a miked amp or like my case you are slowly going deaf from miking your amp in a small room with absurd headphone levels one of these will fix ya right up!

Note that in this song I used a baritone tele tuned to C and the AxeTrack speaker driver had no problem handling the lower frequencies...

Of course guitar tones are a matter of individual opinion but I'm quite pleased so far, while amp modeling and plugins are also an optional route I'm very grateful to be able to stick with what I know...

Nice one Glen.

It's frightening to think how good you might be at the guitar if you didn't spend so much time on your computer. :mrgreen:

Seriously though, I like it. I'd like to hear you do a slow blues where you can stretch it out a bit on the guitar solos. "Stormy Monday" or something like that.

I like it too. Very good mixing.

8)

Two questions (If I may)

Did you use hydrogen? If yes, what drum kit?
Did you do the mastering in a separate step (after mixdown)?

Hi,

Thanks guys for taking the time to listen and comment..

@kawliga

hehe, you're absolutely right that getting into software work is quite often NOT good for your instrumental skills if you play a non-virtual instrument... :) I'm lucky to have a regular weekend band to keep me in the game but I have to admit that things are starting to slip..

@Scary

Hi!

To answer your questions, I did use Hydrogen but I "wrote" the drum parts on a real drumkit rather than creating a beat in Hydrogen and having to figure out if it is actually "human-playable" later. I would have preferred to actually play the drums on this recording but for a quick demo setting up mics and getting as good a drum sound is just too time-consuming..

The drumkit I used is the sample set I created from my own drumkit that can be found here: http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic ... 50&t=12640

And to be honest yes I did master it separately in Steinberg WaveLab with the Waves Renaissance Compressor which all run perfectly in Wine, I'm personally having difficulty with mastering from within Ardour, although I can get close I still prefer the results from mastering as a separate process. I just happen to still have my registered copies of WaveLab etc. so I figure if they work I might as well use them.. :wink:

I think that drums are a little too loud. At least it feels like that in my Audiotechnica headphones. The overall sound is great! Really nice work.

Love your music Glen! The pinnacle of what music used to be. Give's me the feeling of something recorded in the late 70's. Really like,"My Face".

Sounds great GMaq! Thanks for sharing.

I'm also downloading the drumkits to test them. Thanks for sharing those too.

The first bars (including your good voice) remind me a bit of Free. Good handmade music - at least it sounds handmade :)
