Questions about Midi and soft synths

Post by Csaba »

Hi all!
I have been composing music since 2004 and used win (xp-10). But now l give a chance for linux!
l just installed Ubuntu studio. l see there are a few pre-installed daw and soft synth.
Well, l got a M-audio keystation pro 88 and Steinberg ur-22 sound card and an i7-2600k cpu and 4 gb ram.
l used Cubase and Arturia, Native instruments vstis but l see there are other sw's in linux.
My question is:
How can I revive my keyboard + how to load a soft synth in daw eg. qtractor or lmms?
Could you give me some tutorial?
Thanks
Csaba

You cannot load external synths into the linux version of LMMS.

You can load them into qtractor. This is a good video showing it https://youtu.be/8BryCgaPZKU The part where he adds the synth is 11:30 but you may want to watch the whole video.

There are other programs that use them. Here is how to add one in Ardour https://youtu.be/9jclRW6ByGo?t=300

If your LMMS is build with Carla, you can use it to load any plugin from any location. Just need to configure paths where to search your plugins.

Since you mentioned using Cubase, I would recommend trying Qtractor.
It's pretty cool and nice software. Using it for years now! :)

Try building from the latest source, as it has some advantages compared to 0.9.21.

You don't need to build from source. The latest version is always available from the rncbc PPA repo. Currently:

Code: Select all

qtractor/focal,now 0.9.21.25git.197bfd-63
Add the PPA to your sources (if you're using a Debian or Ubuntu based distro). You'll always have the latest when you do normal system upgrade.

I tried qtractor but probably the problem is not with it but with the plugins!
Don't know how to install Linux soft synths? I just downloaded a couple and unzipped they to the downloads folder. Then I specified the route with qtractor but it doesn't load.
How to install plugins? Did I install it? Or did I just unpack? Which folder or something?
Thanks for the answers!
