Basic Platform

Post by defiantone1980 »

Hi, I'm new to Linux audio recording. Is there a specific version of the platform that is tuned for audio recording but without any DAWs or VSTs? I just want the platform & then I can install Tracktion Waveform DAW. Bit I need the audio tunings that for example AV Linux has. Any halp would be greatly appreciated.

Why not just use AVLinux and uninstall the packages you don't want?

Or start with a minimal base system of your choice (Debian, Arch, whatever) and do the tuning yourself.

This will get you started if you want to do it yourself:

Otherwise just use AVLinux, which is already configured for realtime audio.

If you decide on a distro other than the media based ones, I'd suggest using a desktop that is less resource intensive. My current system (which I'm still testing out, but working well so far) is Linux Mint 19.3 but with the MATE desktop (not Cinnamon), and a low latency kernel. I initially tried using Cinammon with generic kernel, but I have much better performance with MATE+low latency.

I'd also do the config scan mentioned above. It's very helpful in fine tuning things for more optimal audio/midi performance. The script also provides link suggestions within the results to help sort issues.

However, if you're itching to just get going, I'd echo the above posts and try AV Linux or Ubuntu Studio and get rid of unwanted software (though personally, it wouldn't hurt to leave them in and try those options out in your spare time). There's still a learning curve if you're not familiar with Linux, but the pre-configured distros will alleviate some of the struggle.

I think AVLinux is your best bet for what you need!
