Unfortunately my experience with a Windows virtual machine on Linux is that it's perfectly fine unless you try to access hardware for a firmware update. Linux does not always want the vir. mach access (usb) hardware directly.
Do you think I'd be better off going for a dual* boot?

* More accurately, triple boot: Ubuntu, AVLinux and Windows.

Where did y'all download this driver...?
It's included in the MCC .zip file.
In the download section for the Drumbrute Impact I can only find an executable named "MIDI_Control_Center_1_13_6_8.exe", no Zip file. Did you download an older version maybe?
Sorry, it's not a .zip file but is included in the MCC .exe.

@Primeval_Mudd: thank you for clearing that up.

BTW I see that the current Wine-staging went one version up from 6.14 to 7.9. Doesn't the driver even install w/ Wine-staging 7.9? If that already has been made clear: my apologies.

Sound gets pretty choppy on a VM. I tried it for reasons similar to yours and was greatly disappointed, even after tuning things up.

I use Virtualbox and Win 10 for Arturia MIDI control and Korg Kontrol as well - no issues at all. I also update firmware in cameras and lens this way, all you need is to select respective USB devices in VB. Nothing of this works in Wine.

Nope. I'm on 7.9, though I just had to check to be sure.

I'm definitely going to have to dampen my toes in the VM waters.

I've bought Win10Pro (it was only £16.00 from a site a knowledgeable friend recommended- scdkey.com) and cleared a moribund Ubunutu install to make space for it but have already hit a wall.

[off topic] Does anybody have a link to the Microsoft website where Windows (10) can be downloaded legally? And does one then still need the above mentioned key?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/softwar ... ndows10ISO

No need for any keys, etc. And if you want to avoid creating microsoft/windows account (only local account setup), run install without network connection.

All dialogs about registration just answer 'later'.

Edit: if running windows under KVM, you might want to have virtio-drivers to get at least half-decent performance: https://www.linux-kvm.org/page/WindowsG ... ad_Drivers

That's great! Did you use the link to the Windows ISO that was posted by @tavasti? By the way, thanks for the link Tavasti! :)

I'd already bought a copy but it was only £16.

Do you get any skips or xruns when running your favorite software?

I've no idea - I didn't check! All I used it for was the patch managers and firmware updates.

The VirtualBox and associated Windows installation are currently hiding in a partition image .iso on another drive after assorted ALSA/Jack/Reaper frustrations led me to start again, replacing the Ubuntu installation with a Mint one.

I know that the change from Ubuntu to Mint won't make much difference to the AV stuff, I just fancied a change of scene.

I think you will like Mint, they do a good job. It's a pretty stable system. You should probably add the liquorix kernel, though, they don't have a low-latency kernel in their repos. I've used Mint with liquorix recently and confirm that they work well together.

The one thing you'll find about Mint is that you won't be able to run the latest versions of everything, because they value stability over cutting-edginess. Some of the less-used audio software is way out of date, sometimes by quite a few point releases if not more. I found that aggravating and switched to Arch, then Manjaro, both noted for being getting the latest and greatest quickly. Manjaro has been OK so far, but I wouldn't say I've committed to it yet. Sometimes you'll find more up-to-date packages by adding PPAs and such, so some of it can be mitigated, but other times, like for software built with GTK4 for example, you just have to punt.
