Major issues running John Melas Yamaha Montage/MODX tools

Post by pax-eterna »

Just installed the windows package ( demo version http://www.jmelas.gr/montage/products.php ) and all three applets installed fine. But when it comes to running them, they all throw exceptions and will not run.

I have the up to date version of wine-staging, and eveything else windows (well the two programs I installed haha!) have installed and run nicely.

When these open I am presented with a black screen, inside the app window for about 20-25 seconds then the app opens, as soon as I click on anything in the app, it crashes with the exception message. One of them doesn't even open before crashing, albeit with a different error message.

Not sure if this is the correct place to start, so if it is wrong please let me know, but these apps are going to be critical. I really would prefer not to have to dual boot windows (any version) JUST to run these rather small apps.

EDIT: PS I have written to the developer but have heard nothing as yet....I bought it as he advised he already had some users runing it in Linux under WINE.

Just to let you know, just tried it with wine 6.14 and have the same errors. Maybe it works in a VM.

Cool, thanks for that. Good to know it's not just me!

Hadn't thought of a VM, I might see how difficult/easy it is in Linux.

Seems running a VirtualBox is not as easy as it sounds hahaha!

Will need more research I think.

I use Oracle VirtualBox from the Ubuntu repo with Win10 for a Kaospad 3 editor /librarian.
My MacOS version isn't supported anymore (thanks Apple) and Wine can run it, but is not transfering anything because of "unimplented MIDI features".
You probably need the "guest additions" installed for USB 2.0 support.

Cool, thanks Toejam - yep after researching that term, I installed them and got it running...Now I am figuring how to move some app .exe's over to that or to at least be able to access them in the Virtual Box :)

I had a UI issue with another program trhat got solved, so I tried that Montage tool to see if that is also affected (it's not), but the shell output 'd2d_device_context_PushAxisAlignedClip Ignoring antialias_mode 0" is a known issue apparently (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/window ... ct2d/d1201).
Someone on the arch forums had that issue with the Sforzando sampler and it got solved by using wine-stable. I could fix some other issues regarding UI by installing the package "gdiplus" with winetricks. Might worth a try, but don't blame me if something got screwed up. :D

Haha not worried about it getting "screwed up" it pretty much is anyway ;)

They probably don't give a shit if it works on Windows. There are no numbers behind Linux to make it worth their time to develope or fix software for wine. Maybe the wine devs will eventually fix it (if that is actually related to the d2d thing).

I haven't tried it. You can install it just like wine-devel or wine-staging, but it will downgrade the version to 6 something.

On Debian Bullseye:

Code: Select all

winehq-stable/testing,now 6.0.1~bullseye-1 amd64 [installed]
I see you are on Ubuntu so you just need to add the WineHQ Ubuntu repo to your sources and install winehq-stable which will get the same numbered version.

Works fine for me but I only use a handful of Windows plugins. No idea if your software will work with it though,

On Manjaro :)

Yeah, I have the very few windows plugs I use working fine. Just these apps! Pretty essential for programming the Montage...I mean, it can be done on the unit but lots of menu diving haha!
