how do i use carla-vst-wine?

Post by autumncheney »

hi, i'm running openmpt on my ubuntu studio system via wine, and i want to use my linux vsts in it. i'm pretty sure that carla-vst-wine is the way to do this, but i don't know how to use it after i've installed it. openmpt can't find it when it looks in program files/steinberg/vst plugins, and i don't know where else it would be. does it put the dll somewhere else? or is there even a dll? i couldn't find any documentation specifically on this and i would like to know, so would someone please help me with this?

I think you need a tracker/daw/host that can load lv2 plugins to use Carla. Openmpt only recognizes Windows VSTs and Carla like yabridge and other bridges are lv2 plugins.

Hi @autumncheney,
these are the steps that worked for me (I'm not a winemusician, but used to experiment with some free WinVST in the past):

Install carla and its carla-bridge-* packages.

Launch Carla, go to Settings > Main and "Enable experimental features".

Put your Windows VSTs .dll in a proper path, like ~/.vst, you can organize in subfolders there to avoid a file mess. ;)

Go in Carla > Add Plugin, press the Refresh button, enable search for the bridged Win 64 (and 32) bit plugins, press Scan.

Once scan is finished you should be able to see your Windows plugins, if you are not seeing them try to restart Carla.

in mix, nobody can hear your screen

sorry, i should've been more clear

i'm not talking about carla-bridge, which lets you use windows vsts in linux programs, i'm talking about carla-vst-wine, which lets you use linux vsts in windows programs bridged with wine (i think)

Oh, you are right. Didn't even know that running Linux plugins in Wine is possible.
I was wondering because I don't even have that package, but found it on the KX Studio site:

"This is available in the KXStudio repositories as "carla-vst-wine" package, you need to copy /usr/lib/winvst/Carla* into your Wine VST dll folder to make it work.
It requires Carla to be installed system-wide, so it cannot work if Carla is downloaded manually. "

The path is different on my system ( /usr/lib/vst/carla.vst ). Good luck :)
