Native Instruments software runs unstable since WINE 5.11

Post by GoaSkin »

Hello,

I am using NI Komplete with WINE-staging, linvstconvert and Bitwig Studio on my Linux setup. Everything ran perfect until WINE was updated to version 5.11.

With the more recent versions of WINE, the (converted) VST plugins are usable for a while (bethween 5 and 30 minutes) until the audio engine crashes. A few miliseconds of the last audio output is beeing repeated infinitely and open plugin windows appear frozen (or do not open anymore). Bitwig frequently shows messages that the last plugin states could not be saved but no WINE crash dialog does appear.

I have to "kill -9" bitwig studio and the jack process and also to run "wineboot -k" before I can open Bitwig properly again.

If I downgrade to WINE 5.10, I don't have these problems anymore. If I update to the most recent versions, the behavior is as described.

Does anybody know if something has changed on WINE which may be the reason for that or knows any solution how to fix this?

Have you tried some really much recent wine versions, maybe wine-staging or wine-dev?

Yes... As written, I use wine-staging from the official WINE reposities.

Yesterday, I made a dist-upgrade and WINE was updated to 5.17 with the result that the software became unstable like in 5.11. After re-installing 5.10 manually over the 5.17 packages, the software was quite stable again.

As a temporary solution, I saved the 5.10 packages on my disc to make a downgrade if necessary but it would be better if the software is also usable with the latest versions.

Oh, for me it gives 5.21

Code: Select all

tavasti@hermo:~/softwares$ /opt/wine-staging/bin/wine --version
wine-5.21 (Staging)

I confirm your experience, 5.10 works well, so keep using it. Make separate test installs,
preferably two or more. They don't have to be huge, 128 gig mini-SD's will do.

I have wine-staging 5.22 on a 300 gig testing install of Ubuntu 20.04
and things that work in 5.10 also work in 5.22.

Odd numbered wine releases are fresh and untested, the following
even-numbered version will have fixes for bugs that were newly discovered,
so the odd 5.11 being a train wreck, is not too surprising, it drove me whacko
for nearly a week

Ubuntu 18.04
And downgrading to 5.21, plugins work.

On a fresh install of the new AVLinux, to insure uniform versions of linvst were used,
I removed all the .so files I had copied over from another wine 5.22 setup,
and then ran the version provided in AVLinux. Plugins, commercial and free,
are scanned and working in reaper 5.9, both linux version, and
win version in wine. I also copied over both the licensed reapers and their configs,
rather than using the much newer demos available on reaper website.

Downgrading to 5.21-staging also helped in my case (Arch Linux) with Kontakt as a plugin, however the Kontakt standalone application is not working as there is no audio output. It still works with 5.10-staging though. I wonder what got broken in the last 10+ releases...

Is wineasio installed and 'registered' on both 5.21 and 5.10,
and are they on separate linux installs, or accessed by swapping
.wine folders?

these two commands will 'register' 64 and 32 bit wineasio:

wine64 regsvr32 wineasio.dll

wine regsvr32 wineasio.dll

Success will be confirmed after the attempt.

You might check aur in case different versions of wineasio
have been packaged.
