Windows VST in 2020?
What is the best way to run Windows VSTs in Linux DAW nowadays? Last time I tried it was Airwave (few years ago).

Re: Windows VST in 2020?
wine-staging 5.x
windows reaper 5x or 6x with wineasio
linux reaper 5x or 6x with linvst wrapper doing what airwave did.
(airwave may still work in many cases)
Bitwig, Mixbus, and other daws may also work.
Carla default settings might need some easy changes
for windows plugin use.
Google searches should provide many specifcs
Linvst website has good details,
Cheers

Honestly, haven't checked. As long as it works, it does not matter is someone doing something for it or not.mt12345 wrote:but project is abandoned, right?tavasti wrote:I am mostly using Airwave, and seems to work for me.

.As long as it works
It may break at next Ubuntu upgrade.
But If it works in Ubuntu 20.04 we can use it for next 5 years

I think Airwave was created for the authors use mainly,
and when in useful shape, shared with everyone, but
without a planned uptate strategy.
Linvst dev has been sharing new versions and knowledge quite often

Beware. Many are outdated. Many are proscribing incredibly complex 'workarounds' which do not have much meaning today.glowrak guy wrote:Google searches should provide many specifcs
When discriminating between results found, try to assess the date it was written.
I use wine-staging 4.5 with linvst from git circa January 2019. I value a stable system and do not update much regarding audio. No adventures in upgrading. All adventures are in music creation. My list on Windows VSTs is short I believe and with those plugins, plus the native Linux ones, I have enough to learn for years to come. Sometimes I'm tempted to get something new, but it has to be damn useful. The latest I got is a Linux native plugin: Panagement, which is great for the stereo field at the mixing stage.
Otherwise regarding Windows VSTs I run all from Voxengo and Melda, plus plugns from Rob Papen, KV331, Tone2, Sonic Charge, many IK Multimedia, some Image Line, all LinPlug, all Psychic Modulation, all Sugar Bytes, and Fathom. Enough material in there to keep busy for a lifetime, really. I use Bitwig 2.4.3 (Linux) for creation and Mixbus32C (Linux) for mixing and mastering. All that on a Xubuntu 18.04 system.
You can hear some in the signature below.
Cheers.

I use Windows VST in Bitwig (Linux) and Mixbus32C (Linux) using wine-staging and linvst and to this day do not know what wineasio is. That says something.mt12345 wrote:How about KX studio project? Re: Windows VST in 2020?
I think any well-known distro would basically do. However, if you use many Open Source plugins, then a distro that has repos already set can help and save time. Another thing to consider: a distro that's audio oriented should have most or all audio settings dealt with for optimal use. With a mainstream distro that's left as an exercise. I use Xubuntu 18.04. I previously used Linux Mint and Fedora. This said, there's AV Linux whose maintainer, GMaq, is a member of Linux Musicians. If you're new to this AV Linux could be a good choice to get all things together quickly and start doing the purpose of it: music.
