[Solved]Audio Pan

Post by saturnin51 »

Hi everybody,

a question about pan. With some songs I can use the audio pan on instrument and I hear it well. But on other songs it is not active. Why ?

Thank you for your help.

I think you need to describe more what you are doing. Pan should always be possible.

Hmm, yeah, I can think of one possibility. If the track you are panning sends it's output to a mono-output, left and right will be summed together thus the panning will have no effect.

Or if you midi pan and the soft synth ignores this. I always use the synth track pan.

I talk about audio track only. The output is stereo. When I pan on the right or left an audio track nothing occurs.

Can you give us some more details, and/or a screendump?

I don't know what to provide. I record my song with several audio tracks. When I replay the song I want to pan the instruments, but I can't. That's all!
The audio tracks are recorded as mono, the output is stereo. What more ?

This is a simple example of a mono track panned left. The "Out 1" output routing is inserted.

Pan works great on this mono track. Is your situation more complicated than this? Are you using Jack? Can you provide a screenshot of the Jack setup (if you are using QJackCtl, preferably the Graph)?

It seems so simple, so I am starting to suspect that I have misunderstood something in your question? :)

OK. I create just an audio track with input and output track and the pan is effective. I think I have made just the same thing for my songs. I tested all my songs and none have an effective pan. But why ? Do I have to make again them all ?

Ok glad it is working. Check the routings on the working song and apply the same to the non working ones!

You access the routings via the small but important green arrows at the top of the mixer strip.

Is the Jack graph correct ? I precise that I want to pan each audio track.

Thanks for posting!

To my eye (I am no Jack expert :) ) it looks a bit strange.

capture_1 goes to both input 1-0 and input 1-1. It should only connect to input 1-0
capture_2 should only connect to input 1-1.
Out 1-0 should (only) connect to playback_1
Out 1-1should (only) connect to playback_2
This could explain why you cannot pan, as your setup seem to mix both channels to both outputs.

You have some kind of PulseAudio/Jack bridge?

Here is my graph. I only use 1 input track in Muse (I only ever record mono sources), and connect it to whatever wave track I am recording.

OK I cleaned the connections in particular all the one with Pulseaudio. Now I can manage the pan for each track normaly.
Thanks for your help.
