The SimpleDrums plugin has those 4 knobs. They are named FX 1-4. What exactly are they, and how do they work?

Click the "Send effects" button to setup the 4 send effects. The 4 buttons controls how much of each drum sound is sent to the effect(s).
Unfortunately SimpleDrums can only load LADSPA plugins (https://github.com/muse-sequencer/muse/issues/851). I often use drumkv1 (https://drumkv1.sourceforge.io/) which has similar functionality and some built in fx.
