A very short and unsuccessful attempt at a april fools joke
Now that that is over with let's proceed to the real story!
I did some digging last year as I suspected MusE was coming up on an anniversary. Unfortunately the archives I was digging through (mainly my mail) was incomplete so I did not succeed in my quest to establish MusEs origins...
However, a couple months ago it struck me that I used to make BACKUPS on cdrom! Who does that today? We (not the least myself) just rely on the cloud... time will tell if that is a massive mistake...
Anyway, I decided to dig through the backups in search of further evidence.
And lo and behold, my past self was pretty good at archiving software packages that I felt was interesting. After going through a few cdrom backups I found the holy grail: muse-0.0.1.tar.bz2, which I'm pretty sure is the very first public release Werner (the original author) made.
If the timestamps in the archive are correct it was made on the 10th of January, 2000. Which means MusE is now a little bit over 21 years old. Wow time flies by. Another interesting little tidbit is that the directory contained in the package is called muse-1.1.1. I believe however that this is simply a mistake in the very first release as everything else fits the timeline that this is release 0.0.1.
I have uploaded this package, together with all other old releases I found, to our sourceforge download repository, if anyone wants to check it out.
