New MusE logo

Post by oscillator »

Hi all,

been thinking for some time that MusE needs a new logo. The wiki and the homepage have seen some big and nice changes. Noticed a discussion about the harp and that the 3d-files are lost anyway.

This is how my thinking evolved, from top left to bottom right.

What do you guys think? Is this something I should continue with?

Profile colors etc should also be a part of this "package", as well as a common "tag line".

About the red color. It's not final, but I like red, and it is a kind of thank you to @Tim E. Real for all the time and effort he puts into MusE (the Canadian flag). :)

This is very nice! What about mixing the capital E with the lyre in version 6) in a single symbol?

That is a really great idea! I'll try it out! Then we can keep the large E, which is important. Thanks!

Hey, too much time around free software communities will give anyone weird ideas like that  waiting to see how that works out!

In what way? Are they hard to read? All of them or just some?

The only one that isn't hard to read is number 1, but even that is harsh and a strain on the eyes. It shouts. I don't want to be shouted at.

It doesn't remind me of what I've been using. Such a dramatic change risks losing people as it's nothing like the original, so there is no immediate recognition and connection. In the commercial world brand recognition is taken very seriously, and logo changes are nearly always done progressively.

@oscillator I think 9 looks the best, the linked characters in the others are a bit confusing.

What about mirroring in the M the same shape as the lyre used in the e?

Thank you for the feedback, What do you think is the logo of MusE right now? Because I can't really find one.

And more importantly: What are the values that we want to communicate? Where is the recognition?

I hope I don't sound like I question your opinions, because I think they are interesting and valuable. So once again, thanks!

I will try that. And I will try to mirror the lyre in the same shape as the M! :)

Some more variants, as well as a totally new and cleaner style.

The image I have (and have had since about 2007) is a gold 3d lyre, but at that time I copied it to a very small icon to use with Rox filer and after all this time I don't have the original any more.

Traditionally the three muses are associated with music, food and spirituality, so that's the association the lyre invokes in my mind. The lyre in your examples is so stylized it's only recognised retrospectively.
