It seems it's not muse crashing, something is killing muse (hence the Killed line in the output). I don't suppose starting without plugins made any difference?
I see the last screenshot is LADIsh complaining about jack disappearing. Maybe the issue is more related to jack? Does it work starting some other client towards jack? Can LADIsh be disabled?

I think I'm just going to reinstall my system because that's the quickest way to resolve anything

Wait! Hope I'm not too late! Spamatica is in the right area I think.

LADISH, eh?

Did you by chance compile in LASH support to MusE?
Please try with the -L switch, plus whatever other switches you may have been using to progress further.
This will disable MusE LASH support. Maybe at least get you started.

I have tried LADISH with MusE briefly recently and things seemed OK.
But I recall older tests where LADISH booted MusE out of the graph (killed) under certain tests or conditions.
LADISH does have the power to close an app, and I do remember it actually killing MusE before.

Other than that, maybe LADISH is trying to open a room or something that you had MusE in.
If LADISH is running in the background, it might do that when MusE starts, if I vaguely recall.
So try closing LADISH if it is open, and try MusE again.

OK, after the QT transition in Debian Sid ended (see viewtopic.php?f=61&t=18396) I decided to install the release version. I am having the exact same problem as funkmuscle.

In my case, I am not sure. I just ran the compile_muse.sh script, which finished without errors. "make install" as root (I did not remove muse3.0pre2, though, should I have?) and ran it. Running with flags -2 -N it worked (as for funkmuscle). Without it, not only it does not work, but it also makes the whole system freeze until muse crashes.
Tim E. Real wrote: Please try with the -L switch, plus whatever other switches you may have been using to progress further.

OK, I cannot run with the -L option, as it complains there is no such option:

Code: Select all

muse3: invalid option -- 'L'

muse3: bad argument
Usage: muse3 flags midifile
   Flags:
   -h This help
   -v Print version
-a Alsa midi only (using dummy audio driver)
-j Use JAckAudio driver to connect to Jack audio server
-J Do not try to auto-start the Jack audio server
-F Do not auto-populate midi ports with midi devices found, at startup
-A Force inclusion of ALSA midi even if using Jack
-P n Set audio driver real time priority to n
(Dummy only, default 40. Else fixed by Jack.)
-Y n Force midi real time priority to n (default: audio driver prio -1)

   -p Don't load LADSPA plugins
-N Don't load Native VST plugins
   -I Don't load DSSI plugins
   -2 Don't load LV2 plugins

-l xx Force locale to the given language/country code
            (xx = cs,de,en,es,fr,it,pl,ru,sv_SE)
   -u Ubuntu/unity workaround: don't allow sharing menus
                                     and mdi-subwins.

-d Debug mode: no threads, no RT
-D Debug mode: enable some debug messages
specify twice for lots of debug messages
this may slow down MusE massively!
-m Debug mode: trace midi Input
-M Debug mode: trace midi Output
   -s Debug mode: trace sync

Qt options are also accepted. Some common Qt options:
-style [=] style Set application GUI style. Motif, Windows, Platinum etc.
-stylesheet [=] stylesheet Set application styleSheet
-session [=] session Restore application from an earlier session
-widgetcount Print debug message at end, about undestroyed/maximum widgets
-reverse Set application's layout direction to Qt::RightToLeft
-graphicssystem Set backend used for on-screen widgets/QPixmaps: raster or opengl
-qmljsdebugger = port Activate QML/JS debugger with port, formatted port:1234[,block]

Some useful environment variables:

LANG: Help browser language suffix (en etc.)

These variables are read ONCE upon first-time run, to fill the Plugin Paths
in Global Settings. Afterwards the paths can be altered in Global Settings:

LADSPA_PATH: Override where to look for ladspa plugins, or else
     ~/ladspa:/usr/local/lib64/ladspa:/usr/lib64/ladspa:/usr/local/lib/ladspa:/usr/lib/ladspa

DSSI_PATH: Override where to look for dssi plugins (dssi-vst plugins: VST_PATH), or else
     ~/dssi:/usr/local/lib64/dssi:/usr/lib64/dssi:/usr/local/lib/dssi:/usr/lib/dssi

VST_NATIVE_PATH: Override where to look for native vst plugins, or else VST_PATH, or else
     ~/.vst:~/vst:/usr/local/lib64/vst:/usr/local/lib/vst:/usr/lib64/vst:/usr/lib/vst

LV2_PATH: Override where to look for LV2 plugins or else
     ~/.lv2:/usr/local/lib/lv2:/usr/lib/lv2
I did not start a LADISH session myself, but I am not sure how to check if one, for some reason, is running. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if I can provide any further info.

(BTW, I am running KXStudio tools, so Cadence instead of QJackCtl, for instance.)

The printout suggests MusE is killed by another program. But as you mentioned it is locking up maybe the window manager or something thinks MusE needs to die.
As you wrote that starting with -2 (disable LV2 synths) does work it seems the best bet that it is a LV2 synth that is causing MusE to behave bad after all.
Did you try running with -D to get debug info on what MusE is doing (sorry, I'm not sure I followed all the history of this thread)?
The idea is find out what the last thing MusE did before it crashed or locked up. Hopefully it points to that a specific synth was loaded just before, if so, try to uninstall this synth and give it a go again.
In any case, report back what what it prints.

Alright.
It's nice that Linux usually is so easy to reinstall that it is a good way to solve issues, still it would be good to understand the root cause. If it happens again hopefully we'll learn more.
Happy museing!

So, it seems to be LinuxSampler... I will try to uninstall it and try again. Now, the last two times the lockup was really bad. Even after MuSE gets killed, the computer is pretty much locked. (So, I will post this before I try again.)

OK, a few more tries...

First, the problem is not LV2, is VST, as I cannot run with the option -2, but I can with option -N.

Now, oddly, uninstalling LinuxSampler did not remove /usr/lib/vst/LinuxSampler.so (is it from Carla?). So, I manually moved it out. Then, it seems it got stuck with Zam plugins:

Let me know if I can provide any further info.

(Should I have, somehow, uninstalled 3.0pre2 before installing 3.0.2? Both were compiled via the provided scripts. I don't know if they do any cleanup...)

Sorry for not responding, time...
I think Tim touched on this before, it is probably one of the VSTs, it's just that it goes unnoticed for a while.
Sorry to say it seems the only way is to test them separately, move the plugins away to some dir so you can load only a subset and see if it can be narrowed down.

That you didn't remove 3.0pre2 shouldn't be a problem. the installation step will update all files that are older than the one to be installed.

Thanks for the reply! Do you know which directories MusE searchs for VSTs? $HOME/.vst/, $HOME/.vst3, /usr/lib/vst, /usr/local/lib/vst. Anywhere else?

It searches the paths listed in the dialog at MusE Settings->Global Settings->Plugin Paths.
With the added possibility that it might search in the environment variables listed at the bottom of "muse3 -h"

OK, found it! It was SFZero. See: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=17788&hilit=sfzero and https://github.com/osxmidi/SFZero

(I've used SFZero a few times in the past before in Ardour without problems.)

Not that it matters much, but why is MusE crashing while just scanning? I could see it when loading it, of course...

If you find that somehow SFZero is at fault, let me know and I can try to file a bug report at GitHub. (I can live without it, but it could be helpful to report.)
