Two songs made with Muse -

Postby oscillator » Sat Nov 30, 2019 5:45 pm

Hi all,

Every year I release a Christmas single, and this year I finally made the transition to open source software, thanks to Muse!

I have made them for 17 years now, and try to release them on the first Sunday of Advent, to try and get into that Christmas mood.

You can listen to the two tracks on YouTube:
A. Lars Domino - Täcken utav is: https://youtu.be/P-y_u3Qrzxc
B. Lars Domino - En sista dans: https://youtu.be/1ZQHEntSdBw

(The songs are in Swedish and are about rough living in Gothenburg, a port town on the west coast of Sweden, about ships sinking, snowfall and lost love.)

A big thank you to all Muse developers for the effort you have put into this project!

Thank you for sharing your work and transition to MusE!

That's awesome! I'm weak for this kind of moody Thorsten Flinck-esque ballads! Didn't digest the lyrics but I get the general idea ;)

Now, you didn't ask for critique but the drums on Täcken av is sticks out a little bit, if I would change something it would be to find a sampled drum kit with less hard-hitting sound. Or maybe just lowering the velocity of the beats would trigger a less hard drumsample (there's a setting on the midi track 'compress' that might do the trick, or at least for testing the theory).

Love the harmonica also!

Do we have to wait until next christmas for more? :D

Hi oscillator! Thanks for sharing this.
I'm always sweating when someone says they made music with MusE  I worry was it too much trouble? Was it worthy?
I care about impressions of open source, at least in our little corner.
Most of all I care about music and have a desire for us to be able to make it while enjoying Mr. Penguin.
I found MusE years ago. Suited me well. Fixed it up. Made CDs with it.

Within the first few moments of listening to both tracks, I completely forgot it was made with MusE.
That's good. Nice work. Sad ballads perhaps (?), but I love that it's live music.
I sincerely hope our audio tracks support is (still) adequate (if you didn't use Ardour or something). Much to be done, and in the pipeline already.

Best to you and family and friends (voices).
Tim.

Great music but the flickering video makes me nervous. Can't stand watching it.

Thank you all for your kind comments!

@spamatica: You are totally right about the drums! I should look into finding a better one. This was a SF2 drum set I found...

@Tim: I used Muse for everything in this song (ie no Ardour), including all audio recording. No problems encountered!

I think MusE meets all my needs just fine. I am coming from a Cubase (long time ago) and Reason (still use it for other stuff) background, and it takes quite some time to adjust to new software. Changing workflow is a bit of a pain.

But the real problem area for me is not the DAW, it is finding and working with plugins. This takes a lot of time. Reason has already solved all this for you.

If you want to listen to more of my music (ranging from Lars Domino to synthpop and industrial) you can find it here for download: http://oscillator.se/musik. Only the latest tracks are made with open source, all the rest is (mainly) Reason. But that will change! :)

I found the songs very nice, the arrangements are very musical, instruments well played, and beautiful voices. Mix is good too. Congrats.

Just a question : why did you choose Muse over others (Ardour, Qtractor, Reaper,...) ?

Thank you!

I did a lot of research this summer, and this is why *I* settled on MusE:

Ardour - too heavy, not MIDI-focused
Reaper - not open source/libre
Rosegarden - only DSSI plugin support
LMMS - no audio recording

I was left with QTractor (which I think is wonderful) and MusE. I made some tracks with both of them and found that MusE better corresponds with my previous workflow (from Cubase/Reason).

I can't really find anything wrong with MusE, my "problem area" in FLOSS music production is now finding plugins (both synths and FX) that I like (and which works) and adapt my workflow.

It is also very nice to see how fast the MusE developers respond to questions and bug reports (as does Rui of QTractor). A big thank you!!!
