project open for collaboration

Post by forestandgarden »

As suggested, I re-post this as new topic:
Here's something I started a while ago.
https://community.ardour.org/node/13886

Somebody even joined. So basic tracks & one contribution are there to play with and get the idea rolling.
I'm not meaning to do publicity for the ardour forums, it's simply all there already and you don't need an account to read the thread.

if you want something to relate that to, have a look at the ardour 5.10 release notes: https://community.ardour.org/node/15114
I'll try it out anyway, but I shall give more energy to alternatives like qtractor.
Ardour 3 wasn't bad, and if anybody would fork from there and make it a policy not to introduce features unless everything else, was a) rock stable and b) fully and accurately documented, I'd be very pleased. I even like ardour 2, imagine, there you can navigate the editor space with most ordinary scrollbars, no more editor windows that zoom when you wanted them to move and move when you wanted them to zoom. Progress is an ambiguous concept - but the really interesting point is that ardour has a very democratic donation scheme where donors can pledge their contribution to specific tasks, so the banal truth probably is that a majority will rather plegde money to feature requests than to a bugfix, let alone donate for something just because it already works, possibly since years.
Ch-ch-ch-cha-a-nges....
Not an ardour-specific problem per se, but still different FOSS projects set different priorities.
10miles off topic.....

I'm really diggin' this groove. I'll see if I can think of some lyrics to put to this, & post a demo whenever I get around to it. ;)

Yeah... I just experienced a bug in 5.9 that was supposedly fixed in 5.5 and again in 5.6, where the Master track moves down. Mildly annoying.
Qtractor has its share of issues. I prefer Ardour at the moment.
Both are very complex software. Maybe I should finish my little DAW project.

Interesting. If I donate, I'll earmark mine for bugfixes.

@tnovelli
Qtractor has its share of issues
Good to be warned. More than Ardour? Or less? And the NON-Suite?

@marksilver : take your time. Personally, I'll probably transpose that fragment (from b to e) and combine it with another one eventually, the other project I've just posted here (Latin Long Play) will be the first I continue, because it got a lot of feedback in the Original Scores&Music section. But everybody is free to do with the project as they please, unless they publish something nice and say it's all theirs, or publish something horrible and say it's my music.

To put it simply, I am not using the same DAW. The first thing IMHO would be to put an easy-to-access stereo rough mix (such as on soundcloud for instance) to see if the piece so far is interesting. I prefer to work, ahem, 'openly' by sharing audio and MIDI tracks only, without any links to a specific DAW.

Cheers.

I am afraid you judged without having a look at the work. The fact that I linked to the ardour forums made you jump to conclusions.

To make it easier, I'll re-post the relevant stuff from my ardour forums thread. This zipfile contains the tracks/clips as 44.1kHz 16b wav files and my own mix as mp3:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1mxTn ... ef=2&pli=1

You need to know that the song has 79BPM, and is in a B minor not tuned to a standard 440Hz a .

And I take the liberty to post as well how a friendly soul with the nick of 'mhartzel' actually did something with that, so we have a little example at least how collaboration could work in practice:
The whole song is here (mix of all instruments):

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByIHW ... U5PQ3BFbG8

Just my guitars (a flac format file):
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByIHW ... VpDcHV3SnM
I had subsequently recorded new parts to integrate and edit the whole into a song, but that work was lost when I had a burglary and the laptops went.

So now all links are here, you can still look up the context at the original thread.

Can't do any harm to have keys. Look, anything goes, I do not even have the original project anymore, gone with laptop stolen, and will probably at one point transpose this piece & link it to another fragment I have, but I don't mind several versions being around, and if feedback is motivating and I find the energy, who knows, I might get more active.

Oh yes, and there are some not too obvious quirks in the chord progression that can make soloing really interesting. The other day, somebody on IRC made me a big compliment by calling the chord voicings "Holdsworthesque" (in reference to Allan Holdsworth), so that would be my style guide, but for example the part mhartzel added on the parallel thread at ardour forums, was rock&roll-ish and the lost laptop contained a development of the song that incorporated that.

Great ideas. Can you elaborate on 'wave' and 'intensity' ?

Cheers.

It probably was a bit unclear, 'Wave' and 'intensity' are other sketches I also uploaded to clyp.it , so if you follow the link from 2 posts up, it takes you to a song called 'emptiness' , if you go to my profile from there, you should find the rest. The project exposed in this thread actually is 'Wave'.
But in time I will hopefully elaborate on the songs, too :)
