Noob wants advice on Ubuntu + MIDI keyboard

Post by technogothica »

Hi all,

I'm an experienced Linux user/developer with an Ubuntu 64-bit desktop. I have experience with computer audio, specifically wave file editing. But I'm completely new to the world of music.

I've started experimenting with Rosegarden, and I've decided to invest in a MIDI keyboard so I can start learning to play. My ultimate goal is to play, record and edit digital/synthesized music within Linux.

I wanted to ask you guys what keyboards you recommend. The M-Audio 49 key USB looks ideal for my needs, but I don't want to buy it and then find out that it doesn't work in Ubuntu/Linux.

A USB connection would be ideal/preferable, and I have no intention of using it in live performances so it does not need to have any sophisticated synthesizers built in. All I want is a cheap, basic keyboard that works well with JACK/Rosegarden/Qsynth, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I have a M-AUDIO OXYGEN 49 on Ubuntu 10.04. It worked out of the box. Sometimes you'll have a problem, when you use two USB-devices.

Scary Hallo, did you need midisport-firmware to use the Oxygen? When I created the wiki page I obviously got that information from somewhere, but forgot to include a link

http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php ... dio_oxygen

I know I keep pushing the wiki, but I see it as a good way to build a reference of what works. I've added all the gear I have plus any I read about here or elsewhere. We need some more personal experiences to help people decide what to buy that will work.

Do we know if USB MIDI devices generally work? My nanoKontrol did.

No, I plugged it in and I could connect it in qjackctl.

I agree 100%. Maybe I should participate also. (If I could only find some more time).

Actually, I did link to a discussion here about Oxygen keyboards and someone said they needed the extra driver. I don't have one to try, but needed midisport-firmware for my UNO MIDI interface. I've updated the wiki to say it 'may' be required for the Oxygen. For anything that is not plug+play we could do with a list of things to try.

Lack of time is always an issue. I spend too much time on-line as it is, but contributing to this wiki is my way of giving back to the community.

I have a M-audio keyrig 49. It has worked out of the box in every distro I have tried so far, in two different computers. It is class compliant.

A reference to a post by myself

I've got a M-audio Keyrig 49 as well. It has worked nicely on many OS'es and distros.
