USB Audio input works with Audacity but not with Ardour/JACK

Post by hanzf »

Hello,

I have Ubuntu Studio 20.04.1 running on my computer, and I have a Fender Bronco 40 bass amp with an integrated USB audio interface.

Using Audacity, I can record my bass with no problems at all.
In Ardour, however, there is no signal in the "capture" lines. Ardout works with JACK, so I think this may be a JACK problem.

I can record my stuff with a Fostex MR8HD and then transfer the files to the computer, so I have a workaround but I would like to learn to use the amp’s built-in interface with Ardour too.

I have very little idea of what information may be needed to solve this, so I made a few screenshots, and a hardinfo report of some details that I thought might be useful. If you think you can help please ask for what you need to know (and please tell me how to find it :) )

Ardour doesn't need to work with JACK, it can work with ALSA (or PulseAudio?) so try that first. Not sure why it's not showing up as a device in JACK connections.

When you start jack have you changed the settings and selected the amp audio interface instead of the default system sound device?

Thank you

I tried both, but it didn’t work out.

Running Ardour with ALSA, I could record through the bass amp but I had no audio output available.

I set the JACK settings to the bass amp (@bluzee did you mean this?) but still get no input from the amp through JACK.

It’s not so much of a problem, I keep on recording with the MR8HD.

EDIT: However, I’m playing with the idea to buy a multichannel USB audio interface (not now, maybe in a year or so) so I wonder how likely I would be to have issues like this, and how complicated it is to troubleshoot them.
