Midi Pad Controller for fingerdrummming recommendations

Post by quadronado »

I recently bought a small portable midi keyboard (AKAI MPK mini). It has 8 drumpads as a bonus. I was surprised how much fun it is to play drums (drumgizmo in ardour) with these pads and now I want to buy a bigger midi pad controller. But I had problems to find out which available pad controller works with linux out of the box. Is anyone here using such a device with at least 16 pads and can say anything about using it with linux?

There are a few gears I considered buying:
  • There's the relatively cheap AKAI MPD 218. It seems to be a simple MIDI device. It will probably work with Linux but I read that the pads are not reliable
  • The Native Instruments Maschine Mikro MK3 is often recommended for fingerdrumming. But I could find out if it will work with Linux. You need drivers for Windows and Mac but I read something about a MIDI-Mode. I don't need the fancy control features for now, just the pads.
  • The Novation Launchpad X is recommended for fingerdrumming as well and it has much more pads.
