[SOLVED] Scarlett 6i6 2nd gen, getting sound into my Ubuntu Studio system

Post by RogerCreasy »

I am running Ubuntu Studio 20.04
The 6i6 shows up in QasMixer, and Jack. I have jack input and output configured with the correct USB port. I can route the 6i6 inputs to the 6i6 master -- if I plug my guitar into the 6i6, I can play and hear in the headphones (also plugged into the 6i6).

I have tried routing the 6i6 output to rakarrak in, and, separately, into Ardour. I did this by using the QjackCtl connections. I get nothing into Rakarrak or Ardour (no meter movement and no sound).

Am I missing something obvious? Or, can someone point me to instructions for setup?
I know I may have missed giving some info you may need. Be patient with me :-)
I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

I don't know Rakarrak but for Ardour you need to create a channel to record, select the correct input for that channel, and record enable to see signal.

@sunrat Thanks. I did connect a MIDI track to aj2 - scarlett. I still get no input.

You could maybe post your connections here, ideally something easy to see like catia or patchage (or the Graph option in qjackctl if you have a recent version of that).

@sysrqer I don't have any of those programs. I'll try to get something installed and post my connections. But, in looking I came up with a question - in QjackCtl I don't see audio out from the 6i6, only midi. Shouldn't there be audio from the 6i6? Or, am I just trying to use the device incorrectly?

You should indeed see it in the audio, or at least the connections for it.

Not sure why you would see midi and not audio. Maybe double check the device you have chosen in the preferences is the correct one, sometimes there can be more than one.

@sysrqer I think I found it. Somewhere along the path of getting this to work I was told to set the Jack master to the USB device. I undid that change, and I have 6 audio output ports listed under "USB, 0, 0-in" as capture_[1-6]. My guitar is plugged into input 1 on the 6i6. So, in jack connections, I conected USB capture_1 to my Ardour track and when I strum the meter moves.

While you did not give me the answer directly, you helped tremendously in finding the problem. Much thanks!
