Rode Podcaster
Hi all
Having huge troubles with my Z1222 Behringer mixer (wear and tear) so went for the Rode Podcaster Pro set up - this would (in theory) make my life much easier.
However (and I know it says Windows/Mac on the box but they all do), I could not get it working in Linux. Audacity wouldn't pick it up, my onboard sound did not see it so I could change to it like all my other mixers. The only thing it did appear in was JACK but it didn't assign a Device number like (1,0). So I am a little lost and had to send it back (within 2 hours of receiving and after many reboots). I just can't get my head around it not working like every other bit of kit I have ever used.
Is there any possible workaround as I don't mind buying it again? My other options are to get it again and use as intended, through my Mac or Windows PC or buy a Midas DM16 16 Input Analogue Live and Studio Mixer instead? Grateful for any advice.

Re: Rode Podcaster
Rode have kindly got back to me and said:
The RODECaster Pro isn't officially supported with Linux systems, however, the RCP is a USB2 class compliant device that is compatible with software that supports USB2 class compliance.
If Ubuntu is USB2 class compliant then the RCP should work with it.

Re: Rode Podcaster
I think USB2 devices should work on USB3 ports.
When you plug in the device while having 'dmesg -w' running, does it show anything?
When you compare the output of 'lsusb' before and after plugging in the device, can you show the line that was added?

Re: Rode Podcaster
In process of getting it back to check those things.
Thank you again.
Edit: someone has suggested using wineasio (and noted I could have found the information in 30 secs on a google search - well I spent two hours on it yesterday - oh well). I have installed Wine but I have absolutely zero clue of how I would get the Rode working in it. Ideally I would like to use it natively without having to use wineasio.
Further Edit: I have tried to install Wine and am just getting errors back so I am even further behind than what the guy suggested.
Thank you again.

Re: Rode Podcaster
I guess the first question is: what would you like to do with the device? Do you just want it to look like a microphone/soundcard (at least from the computers' perspective, that is), or do you also want to use the 'Companion App'?kyle_1974 wrote: someone has suggested using wineasio
I guess to use the Companion App you'd need wine (and that can be rather hit-and-miss). Just using it as a microphone/soundcard might be easier.
As you noticed the device doesn't seem super well-supported on linux, so indeed it is possible we won't get it to work. But at least there's probably a couple more things we could try . For example https://www.reddit.com/r/audacity/comme ... ultitrack/ does suggest people have at least non-multitrack recording working. Do you want multitrack?
That looks good AFAICS!kyle_1974 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 7:43 pmCode: Select all

Re: Rode Podcaster
Hi lad
Error message off JACK is
D-BUS: JACK server could not be started.
Someone suggested going into Pulseaudio config but it's not seen there either. Rode have also got back to me saying they have tried in Ubuntu but they couldn't do it - sure there is a way...

Happy just to use as interface for my mics. I know I can put a memory card in if I want to use without a PC if I am out and about. Not bothered about companion app - I can always put that on my rarely used Mac or PC! I'm happy not to multitrack when it is on PC. This is where I am getting stuck I think - I just want it to act as Mic input into IDJC for my shows.
This is what I get from that command but the top entry could be my webcam?

Yes that's your webcam: the 'USB Device 0x46d:0x825' corresponds to '046d:0825' in lsusb.kyle_1974 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:18 am This is what I get from that command but the top entry could be my webcam?

OK, so currently my suspicion is that the "[ 908.072840] usb 1-2: parse_audio_format_rates_v2v3(): unable to retrieve number of sample rates (clock 1)" error is what's causing the USB device not being recognized by ALSA. Googling for that error turns up https://mailman.alsa-project.org/piperm ... 51825.html.
If all else fails we could try a similar fix/workaround, though perhaps it'd be good to first check whether perhaps it was fixed on the device side: could you run the companion app on a PC/Mac and see if there's any firmware updates available?

Re: Rode Podcaster
Hi Raboof
No Updated firmware to latest, no change. If all else fails I will have to use my mac or PC and change how I do live broadcasts or send it back to get my money returned. It does look very nice though...
Edit. The companion app doesn’t seem to do much of anything apart from reassigning the pads and updating firmware, so I can live with that.
Only last thought is to somehow get it recognised using wine and then somehow (don’t know how) pass that back into Jack?

Re: Rode Podcaster
Looking a bit closer, it looks like the kernel already has a special case for this device: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke ... =v5.8#n412 - but since relatively recently (June this year).
Perhaps you're still on a kernel that doesn't have this change? What kernel version are you running? On what distro?

[strikethrough]Looks like the first release that has that change is v5.8-rc3[/strikethrough]
Wait no seems like 5.8.1 and v5.7.7 onwards have it - clearly I don't understand how kernel version numbers work .

Re: Rode Podcaster
It’s ok, I am baffled by it. I will give it a week until I send back to Amazon so perhaps something will appear then. (Miraculously!)
I’ve never known something not be recognised.
