Uphoria UMC 404 disconnecting

Post by angelo »

Hi everyone,

it is my first post here. So I'm hoping to give enough information for you to help me. If not, please don't hesitate to ask for more information.

So I was using this audio interface on Windows before - working perfectly fine. Afterwards on Ubuntu - most of the time fine. I just sometimes had to power up the device again, but very rarely.

Now I've got a new Notebook with Ubuntu 19.10 on it:

System:
Host: angelo-P15648 Kernel: 5.3.0-45-generic x86_64 bits: 64
Desktop: Gnome 3.34.1 Distro: Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan Ermine)
Audio:
Device-1: Intel driver: snd_hda_intel
Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.3.0-45-generic

The problem is the following: When I connect the Audio Interface via USB it is recognized by the system.

Code: Select all

lsusb -t
outputs the following:
/: Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/6p, 10000M
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/12p, 480M
|__ Port 3: Dev 11, If 4, Class=Audio, Driver=snd-usb-audio, 480M
|__ Port 3: Dev 11, If 2, Class=Audio, Driver=snd-usb-audio, 480M
|__ Port 3: Dev 11, If 0, Class=Audio, Driver=snd-usb-audio, 480M
|__ Port 3: Dev 11, If 5, Class=Application Specific Interface, Driver=, 480M
|__ Port 3: Dev 11, If 3, Class=Audio, Driver=snd-usb-audio, 480M
|__ Port 3: Dev 11, If 1, Class=Audio, Driver=snd-usb-audio, 480M
|__ Port 5: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=rtsx_usb, 480M
|__ Port 7: Dev 3, If 0, Class=Video, Driver=uvcvideo, 480M
|__ Port 7: Dev 3, If 1, Class=Video, Driver=uvcvideo, 480M
|__ Port 10: Dev 4, If 0, Class=Wireless, Driver=btusb, 12M
|__ Port 10: Dev 4, If 1, Class=Wireless, Driver=btusb, 12M
For some reason Dev 11 (the Audio Interface) appears 6 times here.

After some seconds the same command outputs:
/: Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/6p, 10000M
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/12p, 480M
|__ Port 5: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=rtsx_usb, 480M
|__ Port 7: Dev 3, If 0, Class=Video, Driver=uvcvideo, 480M
|__ Port 7: Dev 3, If 1, Class=Video, Driver=uvcvideo, 480M
|__ Port 10: Dev 4, If 0, Class=Wireless, Driver=btusb, 12M
|__ Port 10: Dev 4, If 1, Class=Wireless, Driver=btusb, 12M
Similarly when I power up the Audio interface

Code: Select all

dmesg
outputs:
[ 3726.221603] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 12 using xhci_hcd

As I'm neither a Linux nor a hardware specialist, I thought anyone of you might have an idea, why this should happen.
by the way, the device never reconnects, like it is explained in some other threads and it only is recognized right after powering up - not when connecting the USB cable.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Angelo

EDIT:
  • Maybe helpful: I can even use the interface (listen to sounds) for those few seconds after powering up.
  • I'm talking about Uphoria UMC 404, not Uphoria UMC 404HD

Are you using it with an USB 3 port or with a hub?

What does lsusb say when you plug in the device and don't power it with the adapter? The power supply on the 404 and 404hd is not a requirement, they will work on bus power alone. The error mentions xhci_hcd which is USB3, can you try a USB2 port instead? (There is no advantage to using usb3 with the interface)

Good point with the USB3. I often read that USB3 ports make problems.

Thank you for your quick replies,

Code: Select all

lsusb
shows the same behaviour. It seemed to me, that the first time I unplugged the interface from the external power supply, lsusb showed the device for several minutes before disappearing/disconnecting. However I could not reproduce this behaviour - now it only stays connected for several seconds (which is the same behaviour as with the external power supply.

With regards to the USB port:
I have two USB ports with a blue bar (physically) on the port, I assume they are USB3, and one which doesn't - I assume it is USB2.
However

Code: Select all

lsusb -t
outputs the same behaviour for all 3 ports as stated above. Only difference is the port and dev number.
E.g.:
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/12p, 480M
|__ Port 1: Dev 17, If 5, Class=Application Specific Interface, Driver=, 480M
...
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/12p, 480M
|__ Port 2: Dev 18, If 4, Class=Audio, Driver=snd-usb-audio, 480M
...
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/12p, 480M
|__ Port 3: Dev 19, If 4, Class=Audio, Driver=snd-usb-audio, 480M
So all three USB ports seem to be connected to Bus01.Port1...

When executing

Code: Select all

journalctl -f
from the terminal and connecting the interface via USB, I obtain
kernel: usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 21 using xhci_hcd
kernel: usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=1397, idProduct=0506, bcdDevice= 1.02
kernel: usb 1-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
kernel: usb 1-3: Product: BEHRINGER UMC404
kernel: usb 1-3: Manufacturer: BEHRINGER
mtp-probe[8578]: checking bus 1, device 21: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb1/1-3"
mtp-probe[8578]: bus: 1, device: 21 was not an MTP device
systemd-udevd[8613]: Process '/usr/sbin/alsactl -E HOME=/run/alsa restore 1' failed with exit code 99.
mtp-probe[8626]: checking bus 1, device 21: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb1/1-3"
mtp-probe[8626]: bus: 1, device: 21 was not an MTP device
Thought this may help.

So, when you connect it to the black USB it also gets disconnected?
Did you try a different cable?

Yes, exactly, it gets also disconnected after some moment.

And yes, I tried another USB cable - same behaviour.

The device is working fine on another Laptop. However this other Laptop has Windows7 installed and I also installed the official driver from the official site: https://www.behringer.com/Categories/Be ... ans(en|en).
For linux systems there doesn't seem to exist a driver.

I would try an image of Ubuntu studio to see if it works there.
