How do I test the CMOS battery of my P5B-VM SE motherboard with Linux Mint?

I recently had a problem with my music machine not starting up. I tried a lot of different things to diagnose the problem and nothing seemed to work. Then my friend suggested replacing the battery and like magic the machine would turn on without protest.

Given that you bought an older computer, if you have any doubt about the battery, just replace it, a new battery is not very expensive.

Problem solved! I bought and placed a new CMOS battery and now the computer starts up fine.
